WWE Star Was Just Elected Mayor, and Now I’ve Seen Everything

Share

Wrestling fans won’t see Kane performing any chokeslams any time soon, at least not in the ring.

The WWE legend, whose real name is Glenn Jacobs, was elected mayor of Knox County, Tennessee on Thursday.

Jacobs, a Republican, easily outpolled his Democratic opponent, Linda Haney, by a count of 51,804 to 26,224.

When he wrestled as Kane, aka “the Big Red Machine,” Jacobs barely spoke, as his character was the disturbed half-brother of the Undertaker whom wore a mask for most of his career.

Kane did eventually lose the mask and speak a little more, but now he will make his living as the people’s voice of Knox County.

When he was introduced as the mayor-elect of Knox County, his WWE theme song played in the background.

“Democracy works when everyone has a voice and we can hear everyone’s ideas, so thank her for running,” Jacobs said of his opponent, Haney, in his victory speech. “That doesn’t mean I agree with Democrat ideas by any stretch of the imagination.”

Do you think he'll do a good job as mayor?

Jacobs had a much tougher fight in the Republican primary, where he defeated Brad Anders by just 23 votes.

“Tonight we can celebrate, but going forward we all have to work together,” Jacobs added.

Jacobs, 51, had been winding down his wrestling career in recent years, appearing only sparingly. His last appearance was at the July 15 pay-per-view “Extreme Rules,” where he appeared with his Team Hell No tag team partner, Daniel Bryan.

As Kane, Jacobs had a legendary wrestling career, winning the WWE Championship, WWE World Heavyweight Championship, multiple tag team titles, ECW Championship, Intercontinental championships, among a slew of other accolades in his 23-year WWE career.

Kane follows in the footsteps of wrestler Jesse Ventura, who was elected mayor of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, in 1991 and then served one term as the governor of Minnesota from 1999 to 2003.

Jacobs takes office on Sept. 1.
