Tim Tebow Responds to Jose Canseco's Offer To Help in a Very Tim Tebow Way

Share

A remake of “The Odd Couple” will have to wait as New York Mets prospect Tim Tebow and former MLB slugger Jose Canseco apparently will not be working together.

Canseco said he was wanted to assist Tebow in his professional baseball pursuits, but the former Heisman Trophy winner essentially said, “Thanks, but no thanks.”

“I appreciate it, and I appreciate him wanting to work with me,” Tebow said Friday, according to the New York Post. “It’s an honor. He’s a great player, but for me, I have a lot of great coaches here.”

Earlier in the week, Canseco told TMZ Sports that Tebow’s swing needs help and that he was surprised that no one had reached out to him to help fix it.

“I can definitely turn him into a power hitter just working on his technique and his attitude,” the former Oakland A’s slugger said. “His swing is really too short and too rotational to create power.”

Canseco then offered his services and said he could make Tebow an elite power hitter.

“If you look at his physicality, he’s like 6-4, 6-3, 240-50 pounds, so he’s extremely strong, extremely physical,” Canseco said. “If he worked with me, I could easily get him up to, at the major league level, 35 to 45 home runs. At the Triple-A level, he could hit 50.”

After his appearance on TMZ, Canseco went on Twitter to plead with Tebow to allow him to help.

“I just saw one of your bats,” he tweeted. “(Y)ou have no rhythm right now and you’re (too) rotational.”

Canseco said he would help Tebow free of charge.

“It’s not a knock on him,” Tebow said of declining Canseco’s offer, according to the Post. “I remember the Bash Brothers. But I’ve got Chili (Davis, hitting coach) here. That’s what I’m focused on.’’

Tebow started spring training with no hits in his first six at-bats, but he has collected three hits in his last seven at-bats.

He is hitting .231 for the Mets this spring while playing left field. Coincidentally, his first hit came right after Canseco criticized his swing.

Do you think Tim Tebow will make it to MLB this season?

Tebow hit .273 with six home runs and 36 RBIs with the Mets’ Double-A affiliate last season. His season ended early in July after he broke a bone in his hand that required surgery.

Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said late last year that he expected Tebow to start the 2019 season in Triple-A. That would be with the Syracuse Mets of the International League. A strong showing there could lead to Tebow being called up the majors
