The Terms of Kaepernick's Settlement with NFL Have Been Revealed - Report

Share

Ever since Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid reached a settlement with the NFL over their collusion grievances, people have wondered how much money the players received in the deal.

For a league worth billions, some speculated that the players would get upward of $50 million.

Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report said the talk among team officials pegged the settlement as even more than that for Kaepernick alone.

But the settlement reportedly is much, much less than that.

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the two players received less than $10 million between them.

It’s not clear how the $10 million would be split between Kaepernick and Reid, who were teammates with the San Francisco 49ers.

Reid, who joined the Carolina Panthers last year, signed a three-year, $22 million contract extension with the team last month.

Do you think Kaepernick and Reid should have received a larger settlement from the NFL?

Kaepernick made over $43 million during his NFL career, which includes $14.3 million during his last season in 2016. The quarterback opted out of his contract with the 49ers in 2017 and has yet to sign with another team.

The Journal report also doesn’t indicate how much the pair will have to pay in legal fees, which would also cut into their take.

When the settlement was announced in mid-February, Mark Geragos, attorney for both Kaepernick and Reid, said the agreement was confidential, but the amount eventually leaked out.

Kaepernick filed his grievance against the NFL in October 2017, accusing NFL owners of colluding to keep him out of the league because of his protests during the national anthem.

The matter went to an arbitration hearing, and commissioner Roger Goodell, as well as several NFL owners and executives, were selected to be deposed and asked to turn over all phone and email records in relation to Kaepernick.

The case was in the arbitration system for 16 months until the settlement was announced in February.

Kaepernick last threw an NFL pass on New Year’s Day 2017. He has received minimal interest since then.

Reid was a free agent in 2018 and wasn’t signed until Week 4 by the Panthers.

He had another grievance filed on his behalf against the Cincinnati Bengals that was denied in October 2018.
