Map Shows Just How Few Americans Are Rooting for the Warriors To Win the NBA Finals

Share

Americans don’t agree on much these days, but they do largely agree on one thing — they don’t want the Golden State Warriors to win another NBA championship.

That is clearly illustrated in a map produced by the sports betting site BetOnline, which shows that only three U.S. states are rooting for the Warriors against the Toronto Raptors.

As the map shows, California, Nevada and Hawaii hope Golden State will win another title. All 47 other states, and the whole of Canada, want to see Toronto win.

Yes, Americans are so sick of the Warriors they’d rather see a Canada-based team win.

The map is based on data from Twitter examining how often two popular hashtags for both teams — #WeTheNorth for the Raptors and #DubNation for the Warriors — are tweeted in each state.

It’s hardly scientific, but it does reveal the Warriors fatigue that is out there.

Golden State has won three of the last four NBA championships and is favored to win a fourth.

Success breeds contempt — or if not contempt, at least fatigue. Just ask the New England Patriots.

That attitude is not lost on Warriors star Steph Curry.

“I feel like for the last three years, everybody has taken their shots at trying to nitpick or break us down or drive a wedge in our team chemistry and togetherness,” Curry told the San Francisco Chronicle. “This year, it’s been amplified even more with [Kevin Durant’s] free-agency stuff. Nobody can say anything without it getting scrutinized or criticized.”

But Curry has done this enough times to know how to block out the noise.

Are you rooting for the Raptors?

“We’re a great team because everybody who puts on a uniform goes out and competes at a high level,” Curry said, the Chronicle reported. “We look out for each other. There’s a little bit of sacrifice, and it’s about winning. No matter who’s on the floor, that’s what we’re about.”

If the Warriors do win another title, they would be the first team since the Boston Celtics of the 1960s to win four titles in five years.

Game 1 tips off Thursday in Toronto at 9 p.m. ET. One thing the Raptors have going for them is home court advantage as they had the better regular season record.
