Eagles Reportedly Set To Trade Their Super Bowl-Winning QB
Last February, Nick Foles made news by leading the Eagles to their first Super Bowl victory in franchise history.
This February, Foles is again making news despite his team not playing in the Big Game. That’s in part due to a report Saturday claiming the Eagles will pick up their $20 million option on Foles for the 2019 season.
“The Eagles are in fact expected to exercise the $20 million contract option for Nick Foles, keeping him on the team for the 2019 season, for now,” NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport said.
Philadelphia picking up Foles’ option would be the first domino to fall for both sides.
After the Eagles pick up his option, Foles can decide whether to accept or decline it. If he declines the option, then he must pay back $2 million of his 2018 bonus.
By declining the option, Foles could enter free agency. But that probably won’t happen. The Eagles can apply the franchise tag to Foles after he declines the option, which they reportedly plan on doing either way, according to ESPN.
The Eagles’ intent is to then trade Foles for at least a third-round pick in the 2019 draft, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.
However, all of the above could be just be a bluff by the Eagles, according to The Athletic’s Sheil Kapadia.
Kapadia says the Eagles will not assign the franchise tag to Foles unless they already have a trade partner in place. The franchise tag would cost close to $25 million, and that cap hold could preclude the team from signing free agents.
The Eagles are posturing to drum up trade interest for Foles, according to Kapadia. Whether or not he actually gets traded remains to be seen.
Either way, we’ll learn the Eagles’ intentions very shortly, as they must exercise Foles’ 2019 option by Feb. 11.
Foles started the first two games for the Eagles this season, as well as the last five games, including the playoffs. Over his five regular season appearances, he threw seven touchdowns to four interceptions, and completed 72.3 percent of his passes.
He again replaced Carson Wentz late in the season and led the Eagles on a playoff run. Philadelphia defeated the Bears in the wildcard round before losing to the Saints the following week.
Despite Foles’ success over the past two years, head coach Doug Pederson has made it clear that Wentz is the team’s starting quarterback.
“Yes, Carson is the quarterback going forward,” Pederson said during his end-of-season news conference, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Dave Zangaro.
