Clemson QB's Incredible Statement on His Faith Is a Must-See
With the college football national championship game right around the corner, it’s certainly going to be a nerve-wracking time for many Clemson and Alabama players.
The Crimson Tide has a shot at its second straight national championship, and as many people, including Tim Tebow, have noted, a win would put them in the conversation as one of the greatest college football teams in history.
The Tigers, meanwhile, have their own shot at beating Alabama for the second time in three tries in the College Football Playoff championship game, which is no small feat given how historically good Alabama has been.
In short, despite this just being another national championship game, it feels like there’s so much more on the line.
One person who is unlikely to feel much of the pressure, however, is Clemson star freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
As good as he’s been, Lawrence puts his faith in God above any accomplishments he might have on the gridiron.
He has never been afraid to wear his faith on his sleeve and exhibited as much in a September media session.
“Football’s important to me, obviously, but it’s just not my life,” Lawrence said. “It’s not like the biggest thing in my life, I would say. My faith is.”
And then, in comments that seem eerily prophetic considering there is no bigger situation in college football than the national title game, Lawrence put it all in perspective.
“I just know no matter how big the situation is, it’s not really going to define me,” he said.
“Putting my identity in what Christ says, and who He thinks I am, and who I know that He says I am,” Lawrence said. “Really, at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter what people think about me or how good they think I played or whatever.”
Since taking over as the starting quarterback for Clemson in September, Lawrence has been spectacular.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was rewarded for a gutsy move, considering the Tigers were undefeated at the time of the quarterback switch from incumbent starter Kelly Bryant.
Lawrence rewarded Swinney’s decision by finishing the year with nothing but victories and sterling stats.
Going into the big game on Monday, Lawrence has 2,933 passing yards with 27 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He also completed 65.3 percent of his passes and chipped in an additional 157 rushing yards.
So by virtually any metric, Lawrence has been good, if not great, this year. But it’s not the most important thing for him, because football isn’t where he finds his identity.
Win or lose on Monday, Trevor Lawrence will leave the game knowing who he truly is. And that’s something that’s far more important than a national championship.
