Baker Mayfield Unloads on Colin Cowherd over His Attack on the New-Look Browns
With John Wall of the Washington Wizards injured for most of the past year, Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has become Fox Sports host Colin Cowherd’s new favorite athlete to criticize.
Cowherd ripped him while he was at Oklahoma and again before the 2018 NFL draft, and now the hot-take specialist is taking shots at Mayfield’s Browns following their trade for former New York Giants star Odell Beckham Jr.
“Nobody will be honest about this Cleveland thing,” Cowherd said in a lengthy rant Friday. “It has a chance to be a complete and utter dumpster fire.”
“Nobody will be honest about this Cleveland thing. It has a chance to be a complete and utter dumpster fire… Odell didn’t want to go here, the owner is a control freak, John Dorsey is a control freak, Freddie Kitchens could be over his head…” — @ColinCowherd pic.twitter.com/Igr7uuhrYn

Most of Cowherd’s rant was about Beckham being unhappy following his trade and the Browns coaches and front office being in over their heads.
The only direct comment he made about Mayfield was, “I’m not even mentioning Baker, who’s a kid. He’s just a baby.”
But Mayfield heard Cowherd again mention his name and his team, and he wasn’t about to let it slide.
“Come to Cleveland and ask O if he actually likes it,” Mayfield tweeted. “Just because you say you have a source doesn’t mean you’re not full of BS.
“And while you’re at it… come see if I’m a baby.”

One of Cowherd’s “sources” he is relying on is Giants running back Saquon Barkley, who said he spoke with Beckham just after the trade was announced and Beckham wasn’t too happy about it.
Cowherd responded to Mayfield’s tweet with one of his own.
“You’re becoming my fave,” he said. “This is what young love must feel like. Keep kicking butt.”

It’s hard to tell if he was being sincere, but knowing the history between the two, it’s safe to assume that Cowherd was being sarcastic.
It isn’t a surprise that Mayfield fired back at Cowherd on Twitter as before the 2018 NFL draft he mentioned that he “keeps a list” of media members whom he thinks have wronged him in some way.
“At the same time it really doesn’t bother me that much,” Mayfield said of the criticism, “because I know the people that say some of these things have never actually taken a snap behind center, never had a 300-pound lineman about to hit them while they have to read the defense downfield.
“If I was worried too much about it, I’d be worried about the wrong things. But I do use some of it as motivation. I can listen to all the people patting me on the back, or I can listen to the people saying I need to get better. I know I need to get better, or else there would be nobody saying that.”
Mayfield also said he stores screenshots of offending tweets on his phone and uses them as motivation.
Cowherd’s disdain for Mayfield goes beyond the Browns as he’s clearly not a fan of the city of Cleveland. When LeBron James left Cleveland for Miami, he said other citizens should as well and also said anyone still living in Ohio was bringing unemployment on themselves.
