Baker Mayfield Escalates Feud with Colin Cowherd: 'Fact over Fiction'

Share

Colin Cowherd might be the most generous personality in the entire sports media.

After all, those of us who are paid to cover interesting debates in the world of sports are more or less guaranteed our lunch money every time the Fox Sports host starts a fight with a major sports personality.

Last week, Cowherd feuded with Cleveland Browns stars Baker Mayfield and Odell Beckham Jr.

Beckham, it turns out, had the text messages to back up his side.

Now, thanks to Mayfield, the Cowherd-Browns beef is right back in the news.

The second-year Browns quarterback designed a T-shirt that depicts the Cleveland skyline on the front along with the catchphrase, “The Land vs. The Herd,” referring to the city of Cleveland and Cowherd’s nickname, respectively.

Is Colin Cowherd a "clown," as Baker Mayfield has suggested?

The back of the shirt, meanwhile, reads, “Fact over Fiction,” implying that Cleveland is “Fact,” while Cowherd is “Fiction.”

Mayfield created another shirt that shows the Cleveland skyline again, this time next to an image of a radio microphone.

Above the split image is the phrase “Fact vs. Fiction,” and below it “Cleveland vs. Cowherd.” The words are set in such a way as to clearly connect “Fact” with Cleveland and “Fiction” with the radio host.

If you’ve got $30 lying around, you can buy either shirt on Mayfield’s website.

It would be an understatement to say that Cowherd and Mayfield have had some beef with each other lately.

Besides Mayfield coming to Beckham’s defense last week, the two feuded in April when Cowherd referred to Mayfield as a “baby” and a “kid” and called the Browns a “bad organization that can’t win.”

Never mind the fact that once Cleveland fired the atrocious Hue Jackson after the former coach went 3-36-1 in his 40-game tenure, the Browns finished the 2018 season by going 5-2 in their last seven games to finish 7-8-1.

Never mind the fact that Mayfield was one of the most outstanding rookies in 2018 and now gets to play not just with an offense tailored to his abilities, but with one of the best wide receivers in the league in Beckham.

And never mind the fact that Cowherd is infamous for not doing his homework before he spouts one of his hot takes on his show.

When Cowherd went after the Jazz’s Joe Ingles last August to prop up a particularly uninformed take about the Los Angeles Lakers, he was rightly roasted by Jazz media.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg if you Google “Colin Cowherd doesn’t watch games.”

As for Mayfield, proceeds from the sales of his T-shirts will go to a good cause, as the quarterback has teamed up with Special Olympics Ohio in creating his clothing line.

Of course, it remains to be seen if Mayfield and Beckham will build on that 5-2 finish once the games start in September. If the Browns are terrible, it will vindicate Cowherd’s critique of the Cleveland organization in April.

But in the meantime, it’s just another lunch Cowherd is buying for sportswriters, who get to talk about yet another of his dumb takes.
