Watch: HS basketball coach sets new world record with 84-foot shot backward

Share

A high school basketball coach accomplished something that the Harlem Globetrotters, Dude Perfect and every other trick shot artist in the world never has.

Drew Maddux, boys basketball coach at Christ Presbyterian Academy in Nashville, Tennessee, set a Guinness World Record for the longest backward shot.

Maddux sank a full-court backward shot, 84 feet, while at his Nike Summer Basketball Camp last Wednesday.

It beat the previous record of 82 feet, 2 inches set in 2014 by Harlem Globetrotter Corey “Thunder” Law, according to the Nashville Tennessean.

“When I saw the Harlem Globetrotters posted 82 feet, 2 inches as the world record I thought, ‘You know what, we can actually beat that,'” Maddux told the Tennessean. “That’s why we did that shot.”

But don’t think he’s some one-shot wonder. Maddux is something of an expert at it. He’s been making trick shots his whole life. This video shows some of his greatest hits.

“That old McDonald’s commercial with Michael Jordan and Larry Bird playing horse with each other, when I was young that was a big commercial,” Maddux said, according to the Tennessean. “All of us as young kids in the gym all the time, it got us thinking, ‘Aw man, what if we threw it off the wall?'”

Now he has perfected shots such as the Sit Up Shot and the Half Court Hike. He’s made them from his daughter’s bedroom window, blindfolded off the diving board, from the bleachers on a bounce, and off the roof of the Omni Hotel in Nashville.

“I just became a guy that loved to play horse because I could make crazy shots,” Maddux said. “It’s just something that I’ve always loved to do when I was in the gym. Who would have thought all these years later it would come in handy, helping kids have a better time at basketball camp?”

Hardcore college basketball aficionados may remember Maddux when he was a star guard and four-year starter at Vanderbilt University from 1994 to 1998.

Maddux averaged 13.7 point per game in his four years, including 16.8 points per game his senior season, which was tops on the team and fourth in the SEC that year.

Maddux made 226 3-pointers in his college career, including 79 as a senior, which was fourth in the conference. He also led the SEC is steals and field goal percentage that year.

He was wowing fans then with his shooting, and he’s still doing it today.

“That’s what gives me the most joy,” Maddux said, reported the Tennessean. “Whether it is in our pool, in our backyard, or doing some of these crazy and exotic shots, it’s the other people’s reactions. That’s what makes it so fun.”
