Update on Homeless Man Who Needed a Shave To Get a Job & Kindhearted Cop Who Helped Him

Share

A story about a police officer helping a homeless man shave for a job went viral earlier this week, and the community is continuing to rally around the man to help him get that job.

When Officer Carlson first saw Phil, he was struggling with a razor trying to shave. Phil asked the police officer if he know how to fix the razor, but even after tightening a screw, he was still having trouble shaving without a mirror.

So Officer Carlson helped the man finish shaving his beard. Phil then explained that he was just promised a job at the nearby McDonald’s on the condition that he clean himself up before the upcoming Monday.

He was excited…” Carlson later explained in a video. “There was a chance he was going to get a job if he just did this simple thing.”

A woman from the Tallahassee community witnessed the events unfold and shared a picture and video on Facebook.

Thousands of people were inspired by the cop’s kind actions, and the picture captured by Kelly Duvall quickly went viral.

“I am so proud to live in a community where our deputies and officers are such wonderful people,” Duvall wrote. “Good job Tallahassee Police Department!!!”

Later the Tallahassee Police Department posted a video where Officer Carlson told the story in more detail.

“I like to think of us more as peace officers first, law enforcement officers second,” he said.

When Phil went to the McDonald’s the following day, management told him that his job was still secure but he needed a valid ID and Social Security card before they could officially hire him.

Senator Marco Rubio’s office reached out to Officer Carlson and said they wanted to help Phil get those items.

On Thursday, Officer Carlson printed out the necessary paperwork and brought his new friend to the Fire Department to get cleaned up before going to the Florida State Capitol.

Phil was able to get a fresh cup of coffee and get a hot shower. A local Goodwill provided some dress clothes for him to wear.

Chop Killearn, a local barbershop, even wanted to help him get ready for the big day! They offered to give him a professional shave that would leave a lasting impression.

This visit to the Florida State Capitol was a first for Phil.

Thanks to the continual outpouring of love shown to this man by those in his community, Phil should have that job at McDonald’s in no time!

This sweet story is a perfect example of how a small, selfless act can impact others!
