It's Finally Happened: A Town in Michigan Has Elected a Cat as Mayor

Share

A town with almost 300 people has recently elected a mayor that everyone loves: a cat.

Sweet Tart McKee, 9, was elected in Omena, Michigan, after The Omena Historical Society organized the election as a fundraiser.

There was a $1 fee to vote for your favorite, and election officials shared that they had raised over $7,000 this year.

Sweet Tart is very excited to have won the election, and she is looking forward to her three-year term. She had previously served on the Omena Village Council for three years, and as the Omena Vice Mayor for another three years, according to her profile.

“I represent the best of Leelanau County with the Sweet and Tart cherries. I have had experience with governing/supervising my household,” she wrote. “And having been Vice Mayor for 3 years, fulfilling all my expected duties, I know I could handle the Mayor position.”

While she may be shy, Sweet Tart feels very prepared for her term as mayor, and she has a great team of council members to work with.

Diablo Shapiro, an adorable little dog, was elected as first vice mayor, and Punkin Anderson-Harden, another little dog, was chosen as second vice mayor.

Goat Harley Jones was elected as the press secretary, and chicken Penny Labriola was chosen to be the special assistant for fowl issues.

Omena has had an animal mayor for over a decade, but this year had the biggest turnout so far.

As many of you are probably wondering, what are the duties of Mayor Sweet Tart?

She is expected to appear at numerous events for the town, as well as meet the neighboring mayors.

“They have their paw. We accept paw prints. Legal documents can be executed with a paw print,” historical society president Keith Disselkoen told KXAN.

Congratulations Sweet Tart and the rest of the council members! I think it’s safe to say that this town has the cutest mayor around.
