Students Send Beloved Janitor on Vacation of a Life Time with Money from Their Own Pockets
Janitors have the tough job of keeping schools and offices clean from top to bottom. They are often underappreciated for their hard work, that is until the students of one university decide to give back.
Herman Gordon is a janitor at the University of Bristol. He is loved by the students and they decided that he needed some much-needed time off, according to Sunny Skyz.
The students started a fund to send Gordon and his beautiful wife to Jamaica. More than 200 Bristol students generously donated to get Gordon to the destination of his dreams.
The surprise project started with one student, who posted on the university’s “confession” Facebook page – Bristruths.
The student wrote, “The Jamaican cleaner in the med library is the jolliest man I have ever met, he makes me smile even when I’m in the deepest depths of revision or trying to be, if you want a reason to smile go talk to him for a min or two.”
Immediately after the post was seen, a crowdfunding page was started.
The page was dedicated to sending Gordon to Jamaica so he could be reunited with his family after a decade of being apart.
More than 230 people donated to Gordon’s cause, raising £1,500 (approximately $1900) to send Gordon on a trip of a lifetime.
The moment that Gordon was given the money raised was captured on video in June. Gordon can be seen breaking down in tears at the generous gift.
“God bless you all,” he said to everyone that donated, according to Bristruths. “Everybody will see this and think that I’m a trillionaire.”
His wife Denise added, “I just wanted to say thank you to all the University of Bristol students for this gift that they have given to me and Herman.”
Gordon and his wife went on their dream trip in September. An update was made the Bristruths page about the trip on Sept. 18, 2018.
The post read, “We’re delighted to say that Herman loved his holiday at a five-star resort in Jamaica along with his wife Denise. They celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary there and have gone on to visit family in Kingston.”
Keeping in the giving spirit, all the money raised from licensing of the video of Gordon receiving his surprise trip has been donated by Bristruths to Mind, a mental health charity in England and Wales.
Gordon, we hope you and your wife enjoyed your trip to Jamaica. Students of Bristol University and all that donated to Gordon, you have outdone yourselves and showed that everyone deserves to be appreciated one time or another.
