Stomach Flu Changes Mom's Life Forever. Gives Birth to Baby She Didn't Know Was Inside of Her
When Crystal Gail Amerson began to feel severe stomach cramps on a Sunday in March, she immediately blamed the Chinese food she’d eaten the night before.
“I had eaten General Tso’s chicken the night before,” the mother of an 18-month-old explained, “and although there was nothing whatsoever wrong with the food, at that point food poisoning was my only guess on what could possibly be going on.”
That morning the cramps became so painful that Crystal told her fiancé Brian Westerfield to call an ambulance.
When paramedics arrived, Crystal told them everything she could think of that could have been causing the pain.
“It was scary,” she said. “I was sure I was dying, it was literally the most terrifying and painful ride of my life.”
But within moments, they realized what was going on.
“The pain came in waves and were excruciating. But as the seconds ticked by and the pain was more intense and more frequent, the EMT attending me and myself pieced together what was happening,” Crystal said.
It turned out that Crystal was pregnant, and while the ambulance was on its way to the hospital, she gave birth to a baby boy.
“They put him in my arms to hold until we reached the hospital,” she said.
“I couldn’t come up with a coherent thought, just that I had to do what I had to do to not be in the pain I was in.”
At the hospital, doctors told the parents that Crystal had been about 37 weeks pregnant. Needless to say, the couple was shocked.
“I only gained about ten or fifteen pounds maybe throughout what we now know was my pregnancy. No morning sickness, no huge round belly,” Crystal said. “I worked full time, chased after my 18-month-old son all night. I had no time to stop and realize that I was pregnant, especially since I didn’t experience typical symptoms.”
With a surprise bundle of joy, the family is now learning to quickly adjust to life with two young children.
They have set up a GoFundMe page to hopefully buy a car that will fit two car seats. So far they have raised over $900 of their $5,000 goal.
And as for their new baby, Oliver James Westerfield, his parents say he is healthy and adjusting well to life at home.
“He’s making progress, sleeping well, eating well, smiling when he decides to stay awake long enough to interact with friends and family,” Crystal said. “Mommy and daddy are doing okay, too, but we’re definitely due for a home cooked meal and a good night’s sleep!”
