'SNL' Mocks Republican Candidate Who Lost Eye in Afghan IED Blast

Share

One of the most infuriating developments of 2018’s hyper-partisan environment has been the way that entertainment has become so overtly political.

Entertainment has always been an escape from the real world, a chance for viewers to forget about the ugliness that can often pervade politics.

But if entertainment avenues insist on being political, there’s a right way and a wrong way to do it.

Making fun of President Donald Trump’s many idiosyncratic tendencies? A little low-brow, cheap and easy, but presidents should never be above being poked fun at from time to time.

Making light of an armed forces veteran’s sacrifice to protect our country? That’s crossing a line.

Unsurprisingly, “Saturday  LiveNight” crossed that line this weekend with a tasteless, and frankly unfunny, dig at GOP congressional candidate Dan Crenshaw.

“SNL” cast member Pete Davidson had the audacity to make light of Crenshaw because of the eyepatch he wears.

Do you think this audience understaood who Davidson was mocking?

“You may be surprised to hear he’s a congressional candidate from Texas and not a hitman in a porno movie,” Davidson giggled. “I’m sorry. I know he lost his eye in a war, or whatever.”

“Or whatever”?

Just to clarify what “or whatever” means, Crenshaw lost his right eye in an improvised explosive device blast while serving as a Navy SEAL in 2012. The incident occurred in Afghanistan, according to The Hill.

Even after the wound, Crenshaw remained in the service, deploying to posts in the Middle East and South Korea before retiring in 2016, The Hill reported.

Considering that Davidson’s greatest accomplishment was almost marrying pop star Ariana Grande, he may want to check himself before callously disregarding someone who literally gave his right eye for his country.

Seeing as how “SNL’s” ratings have been dropping ever since it became the open propaganda arm of the anti-Trump “resistance,” the brains behind the show might want to reconsider their tactics. If Davidson’s schtick is any indication, however, they have no desire to do so.

As it should have, “SNL” received a ton of flak for the tasteless segment.

While comedy has always pushed the boundaries of decency, Davidson’s joke wasn’t even funny. His joke was less intelligent than you would hear during grade school recess — even grade-schoolers have more class.

And don’t let it be lost on you that the “progressive” left always touts itself as the bastion of tolerance. What exactly is the difference between Davidson’s poor attempt at humor and body shaming? Not much.

“SNL” should probably spend more time actually trying to be funny, or more concerned with the disintegration of show regular Alec Baldwin. Anything, frankly, would be better than its  attempts to demonize people who merely hold differing political views from liberal New Yorkers.
