Raiders Player Pleads Guilty to Three Charges
Another NFL player found trouble this offseason.
The Oakland Raiders newly acquired cornerback Daryl Worley pleaded guilty to charges of driving under the influence, carrying firearms in public and resisting arrest.
They are all misdemeanor charges stemming from an arrest that took place April 15 in Philadelphia while he was still with the Eagles.
Worley was found passed out inside a vehicle blocking a highway near the Eagles training facility, according to a report by ESPN in April. He was arrested and released on bail.
According to ESPN, Worley pleaded guilty on June 18 to misdemeanor charges of DUI, carrying firearms in public in Philadelphia and resisting arrest.
Three other charges from the night of his arrest — carrying firearms without a license, possession of an instrument of crime and disorderly conduct/engaging in fighting — were dropped, ESPN reported.
For the DUI charge, Worley was sentenced to 72 hours in jail but was credited with time served.
For the other two charges he was sentenced to two years’ probation.
However, Worley will likely face disciplinary action from the NFL league office for violating the Personal Conduct Policy.
“You can’t change the past. Just like plays on the field, you can’t change what happened,” Worley told ESPN Thursday. “You just have to move on to the next one. I was thankful when I talked to Coach (Jon) Gruden on the phone. It was a very passionate conversation. He was understanding.”
“People make mistakes in life. It’s not about the mistake, it’s about whether you learn from it and what you do continuing to move forward in the future,” Worley added.
Worley’s tenure in Philadelphia was short-lived. The Eagles acquired him from the Panthers in March for wide receiver Torrey Smith, but after his April arrest, the Eagles cut him.
One week after he was let go, the Raiders picked him up.
“Well, we looked into it, and obviously, it was an unfortunate matter,” Gruden said, according to Las Vegas Review-Journal. “We have a lot of intel on Worley with Karl Joseph here, who was his teammate at West Virginia. Bruce Irvin played at West Virginia. We have a lot of insight in him. Talked to some of his previous coaches.
“We think he deserves another chance,” Gruden added. “We’re happy to give him one. I think he’s learned his lesson. He has to prove that. And he can help us if he’s right.”
Worley, 23, was drafted in the third round of the 2016 draft out of West Virginia. He started 14 games at cornerback for the Panthers last year and had two interceptions, a sack, 49 tackles and 16 assists.
