Punk Assaults 74-Year-Old Woman in Grocery Parking Lot, Citizens Jump In & Teach Him Lesson
When a 74-year-old woman was assaulted by an unknown man, local shoppers jumped in and came to her rescue.
The attack happened outside a Midfield, Alabama, shopping center.
The elderly woman was robbed and beaten by a man as she was shopping at the local Piggly Wiggly.
The assault occurred on Wednesday morning, according to Police Sgt. Jesse Bell.
As the woman completed her shopping for the day, she was attacked in her car by the man. He allegedly came up to her SUV and demanded money.
The man was not visibly armed at the time of the incident.
If the would-be robber expected his victim to be an easy target, he had another think coming — she refused to hand over her money. The man then began to beat her.
One local shopper saw the entire crime unfold. Witness Kimberly Whitehead told AL.com that the women finished her grocery shopping at the supermarket and then picked up her medication at the nearby pharmacy, also located in the shopping center.
Whitehead told AL.com that the man had been following multiple people and asking them for money that day.
She then saw the suspect assault the women just moments after asking her for money.
When the man aggressively jumped into her SUV, a group of shoppers sprang into action to come to the woman’s rescue.
One of the shoppers rushed to the woman’s vehicle and pulled the man out. He fought the suspect and held him down until the police could arrive.
“We had to do what we had to do,” Whitehead told AL.com.
“We don’t know what he would have done had they not been there,” Bell told AL.com. “We’re thankful he was there to stop it. We need more community involvement like this.”
According to police, the man is being held in the Midfield City Jail until detectives can secure a warrant against him. At that time, he will be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail.
Without the help of these shoppers, who knows how badly this elderly woman might have been hurt. The quick thinking of these Good Samaritans saved her and helped to put this criminal behind bars.
