Likely #1 2019 NFL draft pick called racist for political views, Kaepernick opinion and movie taste

Though the 2018 NFL draft was less than a month ago, it’s never too early to have an eye on next year’s draft.

One of the biggest names expected to enter the draft is going to be a familiar one for NFL fans.

Nick Bosa, son of former Miami Dolphins defensive end John Bosa and brother of current Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa, is currently a defensive end for Ohio State. Based on his pedigree and production, many expect Nick Bosa to be a top-five selection, and possibly even the No. 1 overall pick next year.

Naturally, this means Bosa will be under a microscope from now until his name is called by Roger Goodell at the draft.

To be fair, there are certainly criticisms one can make about Bosa as an NFL prospect. He doesn’t quite have elite pass rushing speed. He needs to add moves to his repertoire, since his reliance on raw strength and athleticism won’t be nearly as effective at the professional level. He could also improve as a run defender.

Those are all fair criticisms of Bosa.

Unfair criticisms of Bosa would involve his personal beliefs and opinions. And yet, Bosa has found himself in the center of a storm after some random social media musings he once posted resurfaced.

In several since-deleted tweets, Bosa opined on Colin Kaepernick, Beyoncé, politics and movies. His personal feelings on all of those topics have led his detractors to label him a racist.

“Kaepernick is a clown,” one deleted tweet read. Notice, Bosa made no mention of race or politics. Yet, that didn’t stop people from lambasting him.

“Beyoncés (sic) music is complete trash,” another deleted tweet said. Again, this tweet has nothing to do with race or politics. And yet …

Will Bosa's viewpoints hurt his draft status?

Now, in fairness, Bosa has addressed politics before. Based on his social media posts, Bosa is a huge Trump supporter. He once posted a tweet calling Trump and Ronald Reagan “Goats,” which is a commonly used sports acronym for “greatest of all time.”

He also seems to think “Black Panther” is the “worst” Marvel movie ever made.

This seems to be the sad reality of 2018. A 20-year old NFL prospect made some statements about what he personally believes in, and is immediately treated like he is the worst person in the world. Never mind that those personal beliefs have less than zero to do with him as an NFL prospect.

Hopefully, come next year, teams will focus on what he can do on the field, not his personal beliefs.
