Nearly 40 Years After Putting Son Up for Adoption, High School Sweethearts Wed
They say that true love lasts a lifetime. The stuff of fairy tales? Or do true love stories take place in our very real world?
Michele Newman and Dave Lindgren would say so. Their love story is one of a kind and one that’s taken quite some time to unfold.
When Michele and Dave attended high school in Wisconsin over 3 decades ago, the pair started dating. The two became high school sweethearts.
As many high school couples do, Dave and Michele eventually broke up. But Michele soon had a secret, one she kept to herself.
She was pregnant with Dave’s son. As she was only 15, Michele decided to put her baby boy up for adoption.
“Before I knew I was pregnant, Dave and I broke up,” Michele told WSAW. “By the time that I knew I was pregnant, Dave was in another relationship and so there was no us getting back together again…”
The split couple moved on to live their lives. Michele, now 53, went on to live in Hawaii while Dave, 55, stuck to his roots in Wisconsin.
It was unlikely the two would ever reconnect. If it hadn’t been for the son Michele put up for adoption over 30 years ago, the two might never have discovered something amazing.
True love is worth waiting for, and boy did these love birds wait decades to find their happily ever after. But I’ll bet they think it was worth it.
And it’s all thanks to their now 36-year-old biological son, Martin Schmidt. When Schmidt was about to become a father himself, he decided it was time to seek out the birth parents her never met.
“The reason I ended up reaching out is that my wife and I found out we were pregnant with our little boy,” Schmidt told Inside Edition. “And it really felt like it was time to find out more about my birth parents.”
It was Michele whom Schmidt was able to make contact with first. The mother and son started getting to know one another.
“To hear his voice and to be talking to him really was a dream come true,” Michele shared with Inside Edition.
Schmidt was the only child Michele ever had. Dave, on the other hand, went on from high school to get married and have 3 other children. He was going through a divorce around the time Schmidt contacted him.
When Schmidt and his birth father finally connected, the trio began talking, and this was when Dave and Michele’s feelings for each other began to spring up all over again.
Now the two are married and rekindling the romance they thought they’d lost. And the best part? Their long-lost son officiated the wedding!
We’re so happy for this sweet family and so glad they reunited after all these years. This story really proves that you’re never too old to believe in happily ever after.
