Miracle Boy Beats Cancer and Survives Kidney Failure at Just 9-Years-Old
A little boy from South Carolina has defied the odds against him. Cashlin has been given a new chance at life and his family couldn’t be happier.
The 9-year-old boy loves to play baseball and video games, but he wasn’t always able to do the things he loves without pain.
His mother, Yameika Stover, is sharing his story with the world.
At the young age of 2, Cashlin had a heart transplant because of a genetic disorder.
Everything seemed fine for a while, but when Cashlin was 7, the family received even more bad news, according to WCNC-TV.
Diagnosed with a rare type of leukemia that affects heart transplant recipients, Cashlin would need treatment. The problem was that his heart couldn’t handle chemotherapy.
Through kidney failure and sickness, Cashlin kept fighting. It wasn’t until his oncologist — Dr. Javier Oesterheld at Levine Children’s Hospital — tried a new treatment that Cashlin’s chances of beating the disease grew.
The drug is called brentuximab and Cashlin became the first patient at this particular hospital to receive it. Within days it was clear that the boy was improving.
“I think he’s a miracle,” Dr. Oesterheld told WCNC.
“He was the one that kept me going,” Stover said of her son.
When she watches him play baseball, she admits she is overcome with emotion each time.
“Despite all he’s gone through, Cashlin shines bright like a [baseball] diamond,” Levine Children’s wrote on Facebook.
“He’s had a heart transplant, cancer and kidney failure, but he’s now back to playing his favorite sport.”
“Cashlin went through the worst of it — from diagnosis to complications — but he received all the care he needed in one place,” Cashlin’s cardiologist, Dr. Gonzalo Wallis, told Atrium Health.
“You’d never know he went through heart disease, a transplant or cancer,” Dr. Wallis added. “Cashlin is a champion.”

He certainly is at that! To go through so much at such a young age and still come out smiling? I’d say that’s proof miracles really do happen.
