Little Girl at Children's Hospital Uses Magic Wand To Turn on Police Lights
Police officers are usually known best for fighting crime — or for giving us those pesky speeding tickets we usually deserve.
But there’s more to serving one’s community than crime and traffic stops. Police Officers often find ways to connect with citizens and make their world a little brighter.
The holidays can be a hard time for many, especially for those stuck in a hospital battling illness. Children’s hospitals all over the country often find ways to make their young patients’ season a bit merrier.
With the help of the Orlando Police Department, Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children carries out the tradition they like to call “Good Night Lights.”
This event began back in 2016 around Thanksgiving. The men and women of the OPD gathered at AP Hospital for Children for a very special “good night” tradition.
Officers greeted patients and waved goodnight while flashing their patrol vehicle lights. Patients responded by flashing room lights and some even had light-up toys.
“Any time our officers get a chance to give back to our community, or make someone smile, we’re just going to jump all over that opportunity,” newly retired Police Chief John Mina said in the 2016 video.
The tradition has become something children and hospital staff look forward to. 2018 marks the third year Good Night Lights has brightened up so many faces.
2018 was particularly noteworthy due to one little girl caught on camera. Magic wand in hand, this darling child walked hand-in-hand with one officer as she shut off the patrol car lights one by one.
Watch as she adds that extra special something to a very special evening. According to an OPD tweet “this young lady had a magic touch.”
This young lady had a magic touch tonight!
We are getting ready to team up with @APHospital again for #GoodnightLightsOfficers wave at kids and run lights & sirens while the kids flash their room lights in response. We love putting smiles on the faces of kids! pic.twitter.com/VYytXR2tgy

No doubt this was the highlight of the night for many. I’ll bet the little girl will never forget her moment as the official OPD fairy princess.
