Katy Perry Starts Singing Gospel Song Along with Teen During 'American Idol' Audition
“American Idol” season 17 has been a whirlwind. The initial round of auditions are finally over, and wow do these “American Idol” hopefuls have some stellar competition on their hands.
Every time we think we may have found our no. 1 pick, a new talent shows up and stuns us with a voice that has us asking, “Where has this person been all of our lives?”
Drake McCain of Spring City, Tennessee, is one of those people. At the age of 17, this young man has seen more life than most. With ten siblings, McCain is the man of the house.
He works at the local grocery store to help his single mom make end’s meet.
“None of the dads are in the picture,” McCain said before his audition. “It’s been hard.”
But the teen isn’t complaining. He expressed his gratitude for his hard-working mom and said he just wants to be a role model for his siblings.

“Not only is this ‘American Idol’ thing just a great opportunity and experience,” McCain shared, “but I’m finally doing, you know, what I love, too.”
Courtney, Drake’s mom, had nothing but positive things to say about her son.
“Drake has just been my rock,” she said. “He doesn’t want to see his family struggle.”
The mom and son shared a tearful heart-to-heart as McCain waited to be called in for his audition.
“I would not be able to do it without you,” she told him.
McCain said music has been what he turns to when things get hard, and he believes being on “American Idol” could change everything for him and his family.
This young man’s faith and passion for music shined through as he began his audition. When he sang the lyrics to “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” and “Oh, Happy Day,” we got some major chills.
There are definitely some “Sister Act II” vibes in there. Katy Perry even got up and started singing, harmonizing and dancing. Soon, Lionel Richie was on his feet and Luke Bryan was clapping along.
Of course, we weren’t surprised when all three judges unanimously voted to send McCain to Hollywood.
“I knew I’d do all right,” he told WTVC. “But I didn’t think I’d come out there knowing I sang with Katy Perry.”
