Group Shares Heartbreaking Holiday Gift Tag Requests from Kids
“Look, Charlie, let’s face it. We all know that Christmas is a big commercial racket. It’s run by a big Eastern syndicate, you know.”
While Lucy’s quote from “A Charlie Brown Christmas” leans more on the humorous side of things, in some cases it’s sadly not too far from the truth. Like Sally might say, “All I want is my fair share.”
Every other commercial on television this time of year is for a toy, a sale or a big shiny new electronic device you absolutely must have.
But there are some who have little to nothing. Thankfully, programs like Operation Christmas Child and Angel Tree Christmas help provide gifts for kids and families in need.
Things of My Very Own, Inc. is one such program. This non-profit organization helps bring Christmas to kids and families in crisis situations.
The organization is based in New York. While anyone can donate, locals have the opportunity to sponsor a child or family by fulfilling a “Wish Tag.”
Like other programs of its kind, these tags are filled out by kids or parents, allowing them to write specific items they want or need.
But you won’t find requests for iPads or fancy bikes on these tags. What’s written on some of them will break your heart.
The organization posts photos of several tags each year on Facebook. One tag from 2017 noted a 4-year-old girl whose only shoes were a pair of flip-flops
If possible, the tags for 2018 are even more heartbreaking, mentioning things that can’t be purchased at any major retail store.
“My dad left. Need a job to support my mom,” a 16-year-old boy wrote. He’s asking for clothes so he can get a job.
Another tag mentions a 14-year-old boy with anxiety who finds it hard to make friends. He is simply asking for bedding.
Still another has been filled out by a mom who lost her daughter in February. The caption for the photo says she’s “a single mom with three children.”
These stories are certainly painful to read, but there is something you can do about it. You can donate to this and other organizations like it.
