Prince Harry Has Worn Bracelet Religiously for 17 Years To Honor Princess Diana

Share

Ever lost someone dear to you? Maybe you have a treasured memento that helps keep that person close to your heart.

For some, it’s an old photograph. Others hold on to a box of letters or a journal.

And for many, their physical token of choice is a special piece of jewelry. As we’ve watched Prince Harry grow up in front of our eyes, many have noticed that he often tends to wear a particular gold bracelet.

Scanning through pictures on social media, you might realize that this simple gold band has been showing up for the better part of two decades. The Duke of Sussex even wore it on his own wedding day, as he departed for the reception with his radiant new bride.

Various media outlets around the world have begun speculating that this ubiquitous piece may have a specific connection to Prince Harry’s mother, the late Princess Diana. In fact, the much-admired royal seems to commemorate his beloved mum in all sorts of poignant ways.

For example, just a few weeks after the initial blind date that changed their lives forever, Prince Harry invited Meghan Markle to join him in Botswana for a safari getaway. According to The Mirror, the couple later returned there to celebrate Markle’s birthday.

Meghan’s engagement ring also features a stunning diamond from Botswana. Both of these details — the connection to Africa, and the engagement ring itself — are intricately tied to Princess Diana’s memory.

Woman & Home explains that following Diana’s tragic death in 1997, Prince Harry accompanied his father and brother to Africa. Prince William and Prince Harry were both young boys at the time, and the trip was intended to help them escape the public outpouring of grief that had overtaken the United Kingdom.

It was reportedly during this very trip that Prince Harry received the bracelet. He has continued to hold it dear as a personal tribute, long after his mother’s passing.

Which brings us right back to the subject of rings. Many royal watchers know that Prince William presented Kate Middleton with a sparkling sapphire engagement ring when he proposed — the same ring that had belonged to Diana.

Clearly, Prince Harry also wanted to memorialize his mother when he himself proposed. This is why the Duchess of Sussex wears an engagement ring that not only features the Botswana diamond, but also two smaller diamonds from Diana’s own personal jewelry collection.

In their first couple’s interview following their engagement, Prince Harry specifically referred to these commemorative stones. He said he had designed the ring to include them so that his mother would be “with us on this crazy journey together.”

It’s tough to believe that it’s actually been more than 20 years since the heartbreaking accident that took Diana’s life. She was only 36 years old back in 1997 when she perished in a Paris car crash.

To honor the anniversary of her passing, both Prince William and Prince Harry decided to share several childhood photographs the world had never seen. During interviews, Prince Harry fondly recalled, “Our mother was a total kid through and through.”

It’s clear that the Duke of Sussex has inherited much of his cherished mom’s energetic spirit. And while the bracelet may serve as a wearable memory, Diana’s generous heart is constantly on display through the ongoing intentions of her younger son.

In a documentary entitled, “Prince Harry in Africa,” the redheaded royal noted that “My mother stood for something — there’s a lot of unfinished busines, and a lot of work that my mother never completed.” He concluded by saying, “I want to do something that makes my mother proud.”
