Cop Sent Out To Rescue Dog on Hot Highway, Whips Out Homemade Treat He Can't Resist

Share

From one angle, this cautionary tale reminds pet owners that dogs can bolt for numerous reasons. Startled, curious, or over-excited canines may take off running without a moment’s warning.

But from another angle, the story proves that it always pays to be prepared. A confused or agitated animal might fail to come when you call — but most pups are pushovers for the right tasty treat.

Just ask a yellow Labrador retriever named Dozer. The Massachusetts State Police reported that this panicked pooch was recently spotted “hot doggin’ it” down Interstate 190 in Worcester.

Concerned motorists had already stopped their cars in a frantic attempt to catch the canine before he was struck, injured, or overcome by heat exhaustion.

As part of this concerted effort, someone helpfully called the cops.

Trooper Nick D’Angelo was already working a detail on the highway when he received this urgent request for help.

He rushed to the scene, but an unnerved Dozer seemed pretty determined to evade capture.

That’s when onlookers discovered that D’Angelo had brought along a handy secret weapon. The officer pulled out a hidden supply of homemade deer jerky and waved it in Dozer’s general direction.

Evidently, the harried hound realized this was the perfect opportunity to score a free snack. D’Angelo coaxed Dozer to his side, then led the dog to safety.

Dozer was subsequently taken into custody — and thankfully, he was outfitted with up-to-date dog tags.

Police used this information to track down the rescued pup’s owners, which resulted in a grateful reunion.

For his part, D’Angelo seemed more than happy to assist.

“Always great making new friends, two and four-legged,” proclaimed a Massachusetts State Police Facebook post, “even if it took a jerky bribe!”

It just goes to show that dog owners would, perhaps, be wise to carry a few yummy morsels during walks and other outdoor activities.

Most canines are partial to safe, healthy training treats like cheese, cooked chicken, peanut butter, bacon bits, apple slices, and even baby carrots.

Of course, homemade jerky appears to top that list. And if you’re an adorable canine named Dozer, it might even save your life.
