Queen in Love with Meghan's Rescue Beagle. Pair Spotted Attached at the Hip

Share

Remember how pundits and hoi polloi alike used to call celebrity newborns “winners of the genetic lottery”? Though not quite universally correct (the lives of some celebrities seem far more curse than blessing), the phrase contains a nugget of truth.

Some people profit simply by being in the right place at the right time — and some animals do as well. Just consider Guy the beagle, a kill-shelter stray who has magically become one of the world’s most famous pooches.

The first anyone knew of Guy, he was wandering through the woods in Kentucky, and ended up on a shelter’s euthanasia list when no one wanted to adopt him.

He earned a reprieve from the needle, though, when the Canadian rescue organization A Dog’s Dream Rescue brought him up north in hopes of finding a new owner for him.

“I always say yes,” Dolores Doherty, who helms the organization, told The Guardian. “I’m a sucker.”

Fortunately, the 17-pound pooch soon found someone to love him — and it was none other than then-actress Meghan Markle, who was living in Ontario while filming the USA Network drama “Suits.”

Doherty had no idea who Markle was, but soon learned about her fame while watching Guy parade around with her on Instagram.

She was further shocked when she read about Markle’s engagement to Prince Harry.

“It’s just beyond my wildest imagination,” Doherty said. “How is that for a rags-to-riches story from a good old Kentucky beagle?”

The story only got more amazing from there. Apparently, Queen Elizabeth II herself took a shine to the little rescue dog.

Watchers of the royal family know how much the queen loves her signature corgis. But prior to the royal wedding, cameras also caught Guy’s head poking up next to Queen Elizabeth in her car as she rode to Windsor Castle.

“It’s a total fairytale,” said Alison Preiss of Pet Valu, a pet store which partnered with A Dog’s Dream Rescue to match Guy and other dogs up with new owners.

“Here is this dog that was in a shelter. Nobody wanted him. And through this wonderful adoption, he’s now living in a palace, running around with the royal family.”
