Demi Lovato Breaks Silence 2 Weeks After Heroin Overdose

Exactly how much influence celebrities have on peoples’ every day lives remains a point of pitched debate. But no sane person would doubt that their influence is substantial.

For instance, British doctor Zara Aziz told the BBC in 2017 that one of his patients came in begging for a PSA test, a diagnostic that can often indicate the presence of prostate cancer. Why? He’d seen an essay by actor Ben Stiller about the test.

On a more grim note, we all recall how famed comedian Robin Williams took his own life in 2014. Well, the Verge reported on a study that showed how suicides increased by 10 percent for a whole year after Williams’ death.

Yes, celebrity influence is real, even if often we can’t determine its exact impact. That’s why I’m so glad to see a statement from platinum-selling singer Demi Lovato after her recent overdose.

On July 24, EMTs were called to Lovato’s residence. “She had two friends with her at her house that called 911,” US Weekly said a source claimed.

“They were hysterical when paramedics arrived and Demi was unconscious. The friends acted very quickly and saved her life.”

The publication also cited multiple individuals who said that the paramedics administered NARCAN to the singer. NARCAN is a nasal spray that quickly counteracts an opioid overdose.

According to ABC News, that treatment saved her life. Lovato was transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where she was listed in stable condition.

Now Lovato has broken her silence and released a statement on Instagram. “I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction,” she wrote.

“What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet.”

That isn’t an exaggeration. In 2017, she released a documentary called “Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated.”

In it, she revealed that she had grappled with alcohol abuse, eating disorders, and drug use for years. Upon entering rehab at age 18, she learned that she had bipolar disorder.

Lovato seems to understand that she won’t over come her problems all at once. It will take time and perseverance.

“I now need time to heal and focus on my sobriety and road to recovery,” she stated. “I will keep fighting.”

The star also thanked her family, her management team, her fans, and the various medical officials who had attended to her. Then she thanked the most important person of all.

“I want to thank God for keeping me alive and well,” she said. Indeed, Demi, and we hope you have a fast recovery.
