Imagine picking up the phone to hear that actress Nicole Kidman was in town and wanted to quickly pop by your apartment to chat about a potential work project together.
That’s how television host Jimmy Fallon first met Nicole Kidman — although the hilarious details surrounding the initial introduction didn’t come out until years later.
It was January 2015 when Kidman appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” to promote her newest film, “Paddington.”
Fallon asked Kidman the seemingly innocent question of whether she remembered the first time they met.
In unexpected and comical fashion, each celebrity told a version of the meeting that left the audience in stitches, and Fallon blushing and flabbergasted.
During the conversation, Fallon learned for the first time that Kidman, who had been single at the time, had a little crush on Fallon when she met him at his apartment.
Fallon had never suspected that an actress like Kidman would have been interested in dating him and fell out of his chair in shock, embarrassment and the bitter taste of missed opportunity.
“It was the worst. That was hilarious. I was on ‘SNL,’ single and living the bachelor life,” Fallon later recalled.
“She walks in, and I’m nervous. She’s gorgeous. By far, the most beautiful person who’s ever walked into my apartment,” he said.
“But I’m trying to be professional — to be someone you’d want to be in a movie with for three months. Plus, I wouldn’t even consider that I would have a chance with Nicole Kidman,” he said.
Kidman recalled getting the strong hint that Fallon was in no way interested in dating her.
“You put a video game on, and I’m like, ‘this is so bad’. It was bad,” she told Kimmel as the audience erupted with laughter.
“You didn’t talk at all and so after about an hour and a half I thought, he has no interest, this is so embarrassing,” she said.
It was all water under the bridge by this time, as both celebrities are married — Kidman to singer-songwriter Keith Urban and Fallon to film producer Nancy Juvonen.
But the interview material is fantastically cringeworthy, a famous moment that most of us, thankfully, will never have to experience.
