It's Time! April the Giraffe Is Officially in Labor
Grab your popcorn, giraffe fans, because April the giraffe is officially in labor.
Staff at Animal Adventure Park announced that April is showing signs of active labor, which began around 1 a.m. on March 16.
Viewers can watch April’s progression on a live YouTube stream and can also sign up for text alerts to keep up-to-date on all things giraffe.
Over two million people are watching April’s every move, waiting for their first glimpse of the new calf.
The calf will be April’s fifth baby, and viewers are excited to find out if this one will be a boy or girl.
“Keep April, Dr Tim, and our Team in your thoughts as we navigate the coming hours, maybe day, perhaps longer, as we approach what would suggest the arrival of a new calf,” Animal Adventure staff wrote on Facebook.
In 2017, April gave birth to a male, Tajiri, who came long after the originally anticipated due date.
Like they did with Tajiri, April’s team of caregivers again estimated that April would deliver sooner than originally thought.
“Behavioral and physical changes are suggesting we are very much moving towards having a calf,” Animal Adventure Park announced in late February. “Perhaps sooner than end of March, as originally predicted based on keeper observations.”
It looks like this time around, April’s medical team was spot-on with their prediction.
April the giraffe fans are loving the opportunity to watch her give birth, even admitting that try as they might, they cannot look away from the live stream video.
“Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined staring at the back side of a giraffe for days on end!!!” Facebook user Louann Townsend commented. “But, here I sit with my eyes glued to the screen with thousands of other people.”
“I was up all night watching even tho I have the text alert,” Barbara Ann commented and reported that April was “non-stop pacing” throughout the night.
As with all things labor and delivery related, watching a birth is full of discharge and bodily fluids that some viewers may find disturbing.
