Hero Police Officers Captured on Video Saving Kangaroo from Drowning
While the kangaroo is known for putting up a pretty good fight, this little guy nearly lost his life to the ocean off the Australian coast on Oct. 27.
The kangaroo is making global headlines after being dramatically yanked out of the dangerous surf by local police officers.
Officers from Rosebud Police Station, located in Victoria, Australia, responded to several phone calls about a kangaroo seen in the water at a local beach.
According to Victoria Police, the kangaroo had made its way out of the ocean on its own by the time officers arrived. Someone had covered the shivering animal in a blanket and police were standing nearby to monitor the kangaroo’s wellbeing.

But suddenly, the kangaroo sprang back into action, bounding back into the ocean waves. This time, the animal was clearly distressed and unable to return to shore.
Senior Sgt. Kirby Tonkins and Senior Sgt. Chris Russo ran into the waves after the kangaroo, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.
The kangaroo was too exhausted to fight against the officer’s rescue attempt. The men were able to pull the kangaroo to shore, saving its life just moments before it drowned.
“He had less than a minute. He went under and as he came up you could see foam coming out of his nose, he was drowning,” Russo said.
The kangaroo was unconscious and needed a few chest compressions to be revived. The officers wrapped the kangaroo in warm blankets and took him to the police station.
Michelle Thomas, who works with the Animal Wildlife Shelter, said the kangaroo’s recovery started off slowly.
“He was very cold, he was still a bit wet and a bit disorientated, so he really didn’t give me too much of a fight,” Thomas said.
The kangaroo spent some time recovering at the wildlife shelter before being released back into the wild. Police said the kangaroo seemed to recover just fine from his near-death experience.
Thanks to many pairs of watchful eyes and the helping hands of a few kind officers, this little ‘roo will live to jump another day.
