Daughter Reunited with Dad 26 Years After Being Told He Died of Heart Attack

Share

Family dynamics can be a complicated beast.

As time moves on and individual lives become more complex, it can and does happen that people stop keeping up with one another.

The story of the Rudolph family serves as a sobering reminder to check in with each other, even if you live worlds apart and are in very different places in life.

Ronnie Rudolph, 72, worked for many years at a concrete plant in Tennessee. He moved there by himself after separating from his wife.

His daughter, Janie Rudolph, would keep in touch with her father from time to time, calling him at work to see how he was doing.

But one day, Janie called her father’s place of work and was told he’d died from a heart attack.

“They just told me that he had a heart attack and he had problems and that he was deceased,” Janie told WTVF.

“I believed it and I didn’t investigate it,” Janie admitted.

“I moved around, I was married and I had my family and I didn’t have money, so I just felt like I couldn’t do anything much.”

Nobody else in the family questioned Rudolph’s death, either, admitting they’d grown apart over the years and moved on with their own lives.

But Rudolph was very much alive and still living in Tennessee. While he had not suffered a heart attack, he did have two strokes which left him with difficulty speaking.

As the years went by, Rudolph believed that his family’s silence meant they simply didn’t want him in their lives — so he never tried to contact any of them.

An astounding 26 years went by with no contact between Rudolph and his family. And then, Janie’s mother passed away in 2018.

“I started looking for a death certificate and I could not find one on my father, so we were thinking he might be alive somewhere,” Janie said.

Janie’s search led her to Lebanon, Tennessee, where she learned her father was very much alive and was living with a friend.

“I was very much in shock, I couldn’t believe it, I thought I was having a dream,” Janie said.

Amid tears and nerves, Ronnie Rudolph was finally reunited with his family, including his 84-year-old sister, Juanita Elliot.

The siblings hadn’t seen each other since 1992 at their father’s funeral.

“I was happy and glad to hear it, and here I am 84 years old and he’s just 72, if anybody is supposed to be dead it ought to be me,” Elliott told WTVF.

Rudolph said “it feels good,” to be reconnected with loved ones after all these years.

After decades apart, Rudolph was finally able to hug his daughter and tell her he loved her.
