Couple Gets Free Lottery Ticket After Printer Jams, Ends Up Winning $22,000
Most of the time, technological errors are super inconvenient and annoying. We spend time in frustration, wondering if technology is actually helpful at all.
But for one couple in Kansas, a simple paper jam resulted in a major payday.
Michael and Virginia Owens, from Tonganoxie, Kansas, have fun playing the lottery. One of their tickets resulted in a free ticket win, so the couple went to the store to redeem it.
But as the clerk tried to print the Owens couple their new ticket, the print machine was uncooperative. “The machine jammed up and crinkled the ticket up,” Virginia said.
Even so, the clerk commented that the paper jam wasn’t the worst sign.
“The clerk made the comment that tickets that don’t print right are lucky,” Michael said. “Turns out they knew what they were talking about!”
The following day, Virginia planned to do some grocery shopping. It occurred to her that she never checked the crinkled up ticket from the day before.
“When I checked my ticket, the machine said to take it to the clerk,” Virginia said. “I just assumed because it was wrinkled up, that it wasn’t scanning right.”
But Virginia’s misfit ticket turned out to be a heavy hitter. She walked away ecstatic, now $22,000 dollars richer.
“I was so excited, I went straight home and forgot to get the groceries,” Virginia said.
The couple has a few ideas on how to spend the winnings, though they haven’t nailed down anything definite.
Michael and Virginia just celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary. One potential idea is to take a trip and celebrate big time.
As grandparents, their hearts are also tugged towards their grandchildren.
“We have two kids and five grandchildren, so I’m sure we’ll figure something out,” said Michael.
“Plus I have some vacation time coming up anyway, so we might take a little trip as well.”
