Woman Walks into Cupcake Shop & Sees Note in Icing, That's When Boyfriend Drops to 1 Knee
A young woman got the sweetest surprise when she and her boyfriend walked into their favorite bakery in Memphis, Tennessee.
Alaina Brommer and Jimmy Gresham first met in their freshman English class in high school. Brommer told Liftable, a section of the Western Journal, that she thought he had “the sweetest smile” she had ever seen. They dated for over a year and a half while in high school, but ended the relationship when they went to college.

The breakup didn’t last forever though.
Brommer said, “I think it’s super special that we dated in high school, broke up, and somehow ended up together again. It feels like it was meant to be!”
All together, they have dated each other for over 3 years.
Gresham described Brommer as “sweet, caring, compassionate, intellectual, talented, brave, selfless, and understanding.” He continued, “I’m so happy and lucky just to be part of her life.” Brommer described Gresham as “the most kind, generous, thoughtful person I have ever known.”
They both have known that they wanted to marry each other for some time, but Gresham knew he wanted to propose for over a year. He began the planning process in July 2018.
“At first I had the grand idea of us both skydiving together and while we were in the air I propose to Alaina, but then I asked what she thought about that and she said it was the dumbest thing she’d ever heard,” he said.
He wanted the proposal to be special, so with some more thought and collaboration with one of Brommer’s best friends, he decided on the perfect location: a whimsical bakery called Muddy’s Bake Shop.
The couple has taken many Muddy’s trips together throughout their relationship, but it was especially one of Brommer’s happy places.
“Cupcakes have always been magical to me, and Muddy’s is one of my very favorite places,” she said. “It’s always happy and joyful, and you can never feel bad while eating a cupcake.”
On Sept. 14, 2018, Gresham suggested that they go visit the botanical gardens, eat dinner, and watch his brother-in-law’s band play.
Wanting to keep the proposal a surprise, Gresham had a few tricks up his sleeve. He told Liftable, “I took her to one specific spot where many people propose in the Gardens, and wanted her to think that I might propose there. It worked perfectly.”
Brommer remembers that moment in the garden well. She said, “After two hours of looking at flowers and not getting engaged, I was starting to think I was totally wrong and it wasn’t going to happen at all that night.”
As they left the garden, Gresham told Brommer that his sister had asked them to stop by Muddy’s and bring her a cupcake before meeting her at the show.
When they walked into the fanciful bakery with gnomes and apron-dressed velociraptors hidden throughout, Brommer had no idea that her boyfriend had talked to the owners and arranged for a local photographer, Shelby Prince, to document their “spontaneous” trip.
Sitting in the case were six custom vegan Plain Jane cupcakes, Brommer’s favorite flavor, with the message “Alaina, will you marry me? ❤️”
She didn’t even see the personalized message at first; Gresham had to pull her back so that she did.
Once she did, he got down on one knee. He then “gave a little spiel about how much I love her, how much I want to be there for her, that I think God has had this plan for us, and that we’re perfect for each other even though we ourselves aren’t perfect.”
Alaina said the moment he proposed was “surreal” and something she’ll treasure forever.
“I knew I wanted to marry him like 3 or 4 months into dating, so I had been thinking about this moment for a long time,” she told Liftable. “It felt so surreal when it actually happened! When he first got down on one knee, I actually looked straight at the Muddy’s employee behind the counter with a look of ‘is this for real?!’ on my face- but then I was like wait the love of my life is professing his love for me I better look at him.”
After the sweet moment (pun absolutely intended), the couple celebrated with friends, family and magical cupcakes.
Muddy’s Bake Shop shared their excitement over their involvement in the evening in an Instagram post, “We just absolutely ADORED being a part of this special moment last week! Muddy’s engagements make my heart happy.”
Gresham said that his grand plan wouldn’t have been possible without the help of those at Muddy’s, Shelby Prince, the photographer, and Brommer’s sisters who threw the after party.
As they begin planning their wedding, the couple is excited for what the future holds for them and will forever remember the role that Muddy’s cupcakes had on this special day.
“I can’t wait to marry him,” Brommer said. “In 50 years, we’ll be old and grey and wrinkly and still eating cupcakes together.”
