Pizza Delivery Driver Risks Life Going into Burning Home to Save Owners from Death
I feel like this is a lesson I learn over and over again, but never get tired of hearing: heroes can come from the most unexpected places.
Jesse Decker learned that lesson when his hero came riding in on a pizza delivery car.
Late on Easter night, Ralph Letner was working past his shift at a Donatos Pizza in Kentucky. He was supposed to leave at 10 p.m. but it was busy so he wanted to help his co-workers out.
He was delivering a pizza to Ringgold Trailer Park when he saw a house in flames. He asked a lady nearby if there was anyone inside.
She confirmed that Decker was inside, but he refused to get out because he was trying to save his home.
Letner ran in and shut down the electrical breaker to prevent any further damage to the home, but Decker still didn’t want to leave. He was trying to extinguish the flames himself.
“So I got down on my hands and knees. Smoke was everywhere. I made my way back into his kitchen and got him to go out his back door,” Letner said.
Because of Letner’s actions, no one was hurt and Decker’s house was saved. Now, Decker recognizes a hero when he sees one.
“Oh, he’s a hero. He’s a hero,” Decker declared.
Letner remains humble about the whole situation though, claiming the word “hero” is too big to be used on him.
“I just felt like God placed me there for a reason because the way I was raised is to help people in all situations,” he said.
“I just feel I did what any person should do for someone they do or do not know. I am just happy we all came out safe and no one was hurt.”
His wife, with whom he has two children, is extremely proud of her husband.
She told People, “Anyone who truly knows Ralph knows how big-hearted he is, and I feel his actions are a perfect representation of this. Everyone is getting to see the side of Ralph I feel in love with.”
