Neighbor Agrees To Install Dog Door So Dog Friends Can Hang Out Whenever They Want
When Hailee first adopted Potate (also known as Tate), Hailee was excited to share pictures of her new best friend.
“I’m in puppy love, and I don’t care who knows it!” she wrote, playing off of a scene in the Christmas movie “Elf.”
Before being adopted into her loving home, Tate was living on the streets as a stray. She understandably loved her new family, but she would soon meet her best friend.
Around the same time, Hailee’s neighbors brought home a dog similar in age. His name is Vernon.
It was an instant connection.
“They love being together!” Hailee said. “I don’t know if they are actually in love, but I like to think so.”
They love each other so much, in fact, that the separation caused by the fence was unbearable. They had to get creative.
“I walk outside and catch them digging a tunnel to each other. We couldn’t get them to stop. We couldn’t keep them apart. They would just keep digging holes to each other,” Hailee said.
Knowing that the digging couldn’t continue, Hailee began to brainstorm ways to allow the dogs to see each other on a regular basis.
She thought about planning regular playdates but then thought of something even better.
“I thought, ‘Why not just put a door in the fence, so they can play whenever, and their humans don’t have to get involved?'” she said.
Her neighbor loved the idea so her dad built a doggy door to install the following weekend.
Now the two canine friends can play together whenever they want!
Hailee said, “I hope that it encourages people to be more friendly with their neighbors, and encourage a sense of community. It has worked out well for us so far.”
