Mom Gives Birth to Son, Nurse Stunned by Boy's Rare '1 in 48 Million' Birth
Everyone thinks their kids are one in a million, but one Chicago mother can brag that her new baby is actually one in 48 million.
After giving birth to a healthy baby boy named Aiden, new mother Krysten Moreno had beat incredible odds.
Hospital staff was notably shocked by the rare occurrence. “I was like ‘are you kidding me?’ ” Diane Leonard, health director at the hospital, told CBS Chicago.
Moreno and her mother, Nadine Hugmeyer, share the same birthday. Hugmeyer joked that her daughter was selfish for stealing her birthday away from her.
Now, Moreno knows the feeling. She gave birth to her son on the same day she and her mother shared a birthday.
“Then I started thinking, ‘have I ever heard of this before? no.” the new mother said in a news interview.
Moreno said she initially refused to believe she’d continue the tradition of the birthday birth with odds so staggering.
“I literally looked at her belly and I’m like, “Aiden, you can’t come until Mommy’s birthday,” Hugmeyer joked.
As the first person in the family to give birth on her birthday, Hugmeyer was able to call the shots to continue tradition.
“Well I definitely stole it from my mom,” Moreno said of the shared birthday. “She was not allowed to have a birthday when I was young.
“So I have a feeling this is my payback.” Now, Moreno gets to learn what it’s like to have at least two decades of birthdays overshadowed by your own kid.
Stunned by the coincidence, Leonard thought the occasion warranted a makeshift birthday party. “We need a cake because there’s three generations of the same birthday.”
“They brought us a cake, sang us happy birthday — all three of us,” Moreno said of the impromptu hospital party.
Although she enjoyed the fanfare, Moreno isn’t discounting the idea that the triple birthday situation is part of something bigger.
“I’m like, there’s no way he’s going to be born on my birthday,” she said with a smile. “It’s definitely gotta be on purpose in somebody’s cards.”
Her mother is bit more firm in her conviction. “I don’t think it was a coincidence. I think it was meant to be,” Hugmeyer said. But no matter what, welcoming a new baby into the world is a truly wonderful birthday present.
