Watch Parrot Recite His Version of Popular Children's Book

Share

There are quite a few series of books that have made a major impact on society and are present in many children’s lives. If you had books as a kid, chances are that you recognize titles like “Where the Wild Things Are” and “Goodnight Moon.”

But one series stands out from the rest: The Dr. Seuss books. “Hop on Pop,” “There’s a Wocket in my Pocket” and “The Cat in the Hat” are all familiar reads.

One of the best things about these books is that they’re appropriate for all ages, from the very young to the recently graduated (what book do you buy a recent graduate? “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”).

There are a lot of similar books in the series, including one written by Michael Frith and illustrated by P.D. Eastman called “I’ll Teach My Dog 100 Words.”

In this book, readers are taken on a journey by a narrator who explains his plan to teach his dog a staggering vocabulary. It’s a great book for young readers, as the words aren’t too challenging and the overall concept is pretty amusing.

While it’s dubious whether a pooch could learn all the words listed, there’s one critter who has proven he’s up to the task. Meet Max, a yellow-naped Amazon parrot who clearly knows 100 words — and then some.

Max has his own YouTube channel highlighting his verbal accomplishments. He sings, he recites and has an oddly distinct sound.

In one of the videos his owner posted on YouTube, he goes through his whole routine.

“He first sings ‘Oh Lord It’s Hard To Be Humble’ with his own twist,” his owner wrote. “The words go as follows but he actually skipped the first line in this video, so it starts out with “When I’m perfect in every waaaay): Oh Lord, it’s hard to be humble, when I’m perfect in every waaaaay, I can’t wait to look in the mirror, I get better lookin’ each day, Now Emma might say that I’m lonely, she forgets I’m one hell of a guy, but I much prefer my own company, over some little dog who can’t fly.

“Just a little background, Emma is our dog who is now deceased.

Does your pet have a secret talent?

“Also in this video he sings his rendition of ‘Take Me Out To The Ballgame’ and he recites his favorite book by Dr. Seuss ‘I’ll Teach My Dog One Hundred Words,’ which he also has his own take on.”

While thousands of people have appreciated this talented parrot’s musical antics, it’s his story-telling that’s getting him noticed lately.

“He isn’t always super clear,” his owner said, “but I think if you know the book you will understand him (of course now that I’m done recording him he’s singing and reciting up a storm and it’s all quite clear – I’ll tape him more often!!).”

He has a few goes at some of the lines, and there may be a few words missing, but being able to recite that much text would be impressive for a kid, let alone a bird! Max certainly has some major skills.
