Prince Charles Made a 'Joke' After Prince Harry's Birth That Broke Diana's Heart
Most mothers-to-be have a simple list of hopes regarding their children: That they have 10 fingers, 10 toes, and be healthy. Everything else is something exciting to discover.
There are a lot of gender reveal parties now, where parents, friends, and family gather to celebrate the impending arrival of the child and reveal whether the baby will be a boy or a girl — but being able to tell the gender is a relatively recent advancement.
Even with the ability to tell, some parents still opt to be surprised and wait until their child makes it into the world to find out and settle on a name.
Some parents have very high hopes about whether their baby will be a boy or girl, though, and apparently Prince Charles was one of those individuals.
According to AOL, Diana and Charles’ marriage was at its best before Harry’s birth. Diana said that it was “the closest we’ve ever, ever been and ever will be.”
Perhaps she knew that part of what would drive them further apart was the fact that she knew she was pregnant with a boy, and Charles was adamant that they have a girl. It wasn’t the sort of thing that could be controlled, but she must have known how hard he would take it.
“Then, suddenly, as Harry was born, it just went bang, our marriage,” she continued, as reported in “Diana: Her True Story,” a book by Andrew Norton. “The whole thing went down the drain.”
Because she knew how badly her husband wanted a girl, she kept Harry’s gender a secret until she couldn’t anymore. He was surprised, to say the least.
“Oh God, it’s a boy,” was his comment upon realizing they weren’t having a girl. As if that weren’t uncharitable enough, his second comment really drove it home: “And he’s even got red hair.”
Diana’s family boasted many red-headed members. She’d just spent hours in labor — without medication — to bring their son into the world, and that was the kind of thanks she got? She was understandably upset by his offhand comments.
Months later Charles was still going on about it, saying that they “were so disappointed — we thought it would be a girl.” Obviously he spoke for himself, as Diana seemed to have no problem with her son.
While Prince Charles brushed off his comments as part of his joking, it’s difficult to believe that when he was still singing the same tune months later. Princess Diana did not find his commentary amusing in the slightest, and it crushed her.
To all appearances, Prince Charles has gotten over his initial disappointment, but that doesn’t change the fact that he said those things and that Harry must know about them, too.
