'ALF' Star Max Wright Dies at Age 75 After Long Battle with Cancer
Cancer is a vicious and horrible disease that has touched far too many lives. On June 26, it took a well-loved actor who was a prominent figure in many people’s lives.
Max Wright appeared in many movies and shows, including “Friends,” “Misfits of Science,” “The Drew Carey Show” and “Cheers.”
But he is probably best known for his role starring alongside a certain funny-looking puppet.
For four years, from 1986 to 1990, Wright played Willie Tanner on “ALF.” While audiences loved the show, Wright wasn’t quite as taken with it.
According to his obituary, Wright told People that it was a difficult job, “hard work and very grim,” and that he was “hugely eager to get it over with.”
After putting in the hard work, though, Wright at least appreciated the show’s humor. “‘ALF’ was funny and full of invention,” he said. “His movement was so expressive that once I actually could see the puppet blush.”
The show wasn’t the only factor that was making Wright’s life difficult. In 1995, he was diagnosed with lymphoma.
Following treatment, the cancer went into remission and left Wright alone until 2019. Initially, Wright was ecstatic to get the all-clear and be able to return to doing what he loved: acting.

“It was electrifying,” he said, according to his obituary. “I came back to life after being on the edge, with a tremendous gusto for the things I love.”
Thankfully, Wright got over 20 more years before the cancer came back and claimed him. He passed away at the age of 75, leaving many fans to mourn the loss.
RIP Max Wright – A hilarious and talented actor. Sad news to hear of his passing. Who will keep ALF in check now?
