Age 10 Boy Cries Reading Letter Telling Him Parents Got Him Puppy He's Been Dreaming Of

Share

When you’re young and the world is at your fingertips, asking for grand gifts comes with the territory. Do you know any little girl who hasn’t, at some point in her life, asked for a pony?

What little boy hasn’t wished for a dump truck or a real, honest-to-goodness tractor? Reality hasn’t set in yet, it hasn’t crushed their whimsy, and they think their parents are capable of even these Herculean feats.

As we get older and life whips us and our expectations into shape, we can lose a bit of the wishing and set our sights on more attainable goals.

Like a puppy. That one makes it to the top of many wish lists.

It’s not a ridiculous request. The initial start-up costs might be hefty, and the real challenge is the ongoing care, but most people would agree that the benefits outweigh the costs.

One boy named Waylon, from Florida, had kept “puppy” at the top of his list for most of his life. His parents had held off, though.

That was probably wise. If every kid who wanted a dog got one without waiting or working for it, they may not be as invested or serious about the long-term needs that puppy will have.

But 10-year-old Waylon had proven that he was serious, and his parents decided it was time.

He’d just gotten back from camp when his parents sat him down on the porch and handed him a letter to read. He started tentatively.

“We have a special present for you, it’s something you’ve wished for endlessly — always hoping and asking, please will you get one for me?” he read.

At that point, he looked up and laughed, perhaps starting to pick up on what that meant.

“We hope that you love… her…” he read, but then stopped, looking up at his mom with wide eyes and mouth agape.

“Read it,” she encouraged him.

“No you didn’t…” he said, then turned back to the letter. After laughing again and choking back the emotion, he continued.

“We hope that you love her each and every day, be gentle and loving in your own special way. She’ll be your best friend, the most loving of all, standing by your side whenever you call.”

“As she grows, she will rely on you and teach responsibility, meet your new puppy, her name is Liberty!”

As he finished reading, a Weimaraner puppy with a bow around her neck was plopped onto the boy’s lap. He started crying as he cradled his new pet.

Hopefully these two will have plenty of fun adventures ahead of them!
