After 1-Year-Old Son Has Brain Surgery, Father Gets Tattoo of Scar To Match

Watching your child suffer is one of the most difficult things a parent can face. Depending on what life holds in store, that suffering will take different forms, but as children grow and learn about life and the world, they will experience pain.

Most parents wish they could take that pain on themselves to spare their children, but since that’s not possible, some have found creative ways to show solidarity with those they love.

Many people will shave their heads to support loved ones who are struggling with cancer or participate in or lead fundraisers to find cures.

But some dads have found a very visible way to support their young ones, to make them feel more secure and less alone: tattoos.

It might seem strange at first, but some parents have opted to get tattoos to match the scars their warrior kids have developed along their journeys.

Drake Britt is following in that trend.

The 26-year-old dad’s young son has been through mcuh more than the average adult.

It all began when Britt noticed an odd growth on his son’s head. There was a bump on the right side of little Damian’s skull, and that alone was a terrifying discovery.

Do you think this is a good way to show solidarity?

Doctors soon realized the 1-year-old had a cyst on his skull, and no small cyst either — according to Inside Edition, it was tennis-ball-sized.

The operation that removed the growth left a stitched scar on the side of the boy’s head. At his age, he probably doesn’t think about it much or even realize the implications, but Britt is looking to the future and knows that his son might need a little confidence once he’s old enough to go to school.

“The main reason I got this tattoo was to help show support to my son when he gets into school and people start asking him what the scar is or when he gets made fun of,” Britt said, “I can be there and be like ‘I have the same thing on my head it’s there for life.'”

“It’s to symbolize that if I could have taken the scar, I would hav,” he added. “Out of all my tattoos, it definitely means the most to me.”

He kept the tattoo a surprise for Damian’s mom. When she saw it, she burst into tears.

He had a special friend who was a tattoo artist work on the sentimental piece. Joel Wiggers said he hadn’t done anything quite like it before.

“It was a first for me,” he said. “I thought it was a beautiful gesture to make for his son, because I have my own kids as well. It will definitely bond them closer later on in life.”
