Jets Claim They Knew Lions' Signals and Plays in Monday Night Rout

Share

If the New York Jets looked like they knew what Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was going to do in advance Monday night, they did.

At least that’s what Jets linebacker Darron Lee said after the Jets’ 48-17 rout of the Lions on “Monday Night Football.”

“We were calling out their plays as he’s getting up to the line. We knew his signals, we knew everything,” Lee said, according to the New York Post. “Just seemed like we were in his head as a defense, but that’s just preparation for us all around. They run pretty true to whatever they get out of their formations and everybody knew it.”

Lee had two of New York’s four interceptions against Stafford, one of them a 36-yard pick-six in the third quarter that put the Jets up 31-17.

It was the Jets first defensive touchdown since 2013.

Stafford went 27-46 for 286 yards with one touchdown and the four interceptions. Lions backup Matt Cassel also threw an interception in garbage time.

Do you think the Jets will make the playoffs?

“I’ve been watching that formation since like July,” Lee said, reported the Post. “Jamal [Adams] called it out, I called it out. I’m like, ‘Just sit there and wait on the inside route.’ It was either gonna be a snag route or a ram route, and he ran a ram route. It was right there.”

Cornerback Morris Claiborne, safety Jamal Adams and cornerback Trumaine Johnson also had interceptions for the Jets.

“The offense paints a picture for you each and every week to tell you what they’re gonna do, as long as you study your opponent,” Adams said, according to the Post.

The Jets players said it wasn’t a case of stealing signs, it was just good film study leading up to the game.

“Our film study this week was great. It was probably one of the best I’ve been around as far as preparing for the game,” Claiborne said, reported USA Today. “And one of the big things, us as a defense, we want to talk, and we was out on the field, certain guys were seeing certain things that showed up in reports and they’re calling it out and get everybody on the same page, so at least we have an idea of what’s about to happen or where they’re trying to beat us or how they’re trying to hurt us.”

Now the Miami Dolphins, the Jets’ opponents Sunday, will have their guard up to make sure it doesn’t happen to them.

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold threw a pick-six on his first throw as a pro, but rebounded nicely to finish 16 of 21 for 198 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
