Gospel Choir That Earned Fame from Royal Wedding Performance Signs Record Deal

Share

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding was watched by people all over the world. Around 1.9 billion people gathered around their TV screens to watch the couple’s union in May.

There were many parts of the wedding that stood out to all the fans of the royal family. One of those parts was the performance of “Stand by Me” by The Kingdom Choir.

Before their memorable performance for the royal couple, the biggest crowd the choir performed for was about 200 people.

After singing “Stand by Me,” their performance topped the U.S. gospel chart and their video on YouTube received 7.9 million views.

The London-based choir was formed in 1994 by award-winning conductor Karen Gibson. Before forming the choir of 30 singers, she sang backup vocals for The Beautiful South.

They have performed with multiple singers, including Sir Elton John, Luther Vandross, The Spice Girls and Michael Ball.

On Tuesday, the Kingdom Choir celebrated a milestone that every performer dreams of: Signing a major record deal with Sony Music U.K.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have signed The Kingdom Choir to Sony. Along with the rest of the world, we were stunned by their incredible performance at The Royal Wedding, so we jumped at the chance to sign them,” said Nicola Tuer, COO, Sony Music U.K.

“The choir believes in love, music and power and we are excited to capture this on record for their fans across the globe.”

The Kingdom Choir’s first album will be released on Nov. 2, and they did confirm that “Stand by Me” will be a featured song!

“The Kingdom Choir are absolutely delighted with the journey of the past few months! It’s been a roller coaster, but we wouldn’t have it any other way — first, the honour of being able to sing at the Royal Wedding, and then the thrill of being signed to Sony!” conductor Karen Gibson commented.

“It’s like an un-dreamt dream — one that you wouldn’t even consider because you never thought it could happen to you.”
