'As a Gay Man...': Ilhan Omar's Ex-'Husband' Has Acknowledged Homosexuality in Academic Writing

Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, the man Rep. Ilhan Omar legally married in 2009 and divorced in 2017, has described himself in an academic paper as a “gay man.”

Elmi, a doctoral researcher at the University of Bristol, published a paper entitled “Out in the Field: Notes on Researching Queer Violence in Kenya” in August 2026 in TOR: The Open Review for the Social Sciences.

He writes, “As a gay man of the East African diaspora, my fieldwork was never neutral.”

He adds that the work was shaped by tension, risk, intimacy, and vulnerability as he navigated his own identity while interviewing people in Kenya, where homosexuality remains criminalized.

The paper also records his awareness of Somali community attitudes.

“In areas with a visible Somali presence, I often felt a degree of anxiety due to an awareness, rooted in personal experience, of the community’s prevailing conservative attitudes towards queerness,” he writes.

That claim does not specify how far back the personal experience reaches, but it places Elmi’s understanding of those attitudes in his own history rather than in abstract research.

Should Ilhan Omar face consequences for her marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi given the allegations of fraud?

Omar’s 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi has faced intense scrutiny for years. Critics have long speculated that the union was arranged to help Elmi obtain legal status, and President Donald Trump has publicly accused Omar of marrying her biological brother.

While Omar has firmly denied both allegations, the marriage has previously drawn the attention of federal authorities. The couple’s divorce was finalized in 2017.

The new paper supplies an explicit statement from Elmi himself about his sexual orientation.

It does not prove the marriage was a sham, but it adds a documented detail to a relationship that already carries unanswered questions about motive and family ties.

Elmi’s University of Bristol profile describes his work as grounded in “queer African epistemologies and standpoint methodology.”

The Somali community passage remains the part that points toward Elmi’s past, tying his present anxiety to prior personal experience.

How long that experience has existed is not answered on the page.
