War on Women: DNC Waited to Issue Statement on Ellison Until Day He Won
To hear liberals talk, it’s conservative Republicans who hate all women, who work to belittle, disenfranchise and even oppress them in a patriarchal society; and we are reminded of this by the liberal media quite frequently.
As such, whenever allegations of domestic violence or sexual abuse and misconduct arise against a Republican politician, Democrats and their media allies are quick to pounce and demand the accused individual immediately resign in disgrace, evidence or lack thereof notwithstanding. We are also told that we must believe the word of the accuser, again, specific evidence in the case be damned.
They then immediately shift their focus to the rest of Republicans more generally and attempt to tie them in with the behavior of the accused, as well as make them all go on record as either condemning or supporting their colleague who is under fire.
Yet, when similar allegations arise against an elected Democrat, other Democrats and their media lackeys tend to circle the wagons and mount a fierce defense of their besieged comrade. If not that, then they at least try to ignore the issue and give it as little coverage as possible in the hope it will soon blow over without causing significant damage to other Democrats.
Consider all of that in relation to the recent allegations of domestic abuse and violence that arose over the weekend and have been lodged against Democrat Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison. According to The Daily Wire, it took three whole days before the Democratic National Committee — of which Ellison serves as co-chair — to issue a statement that even acknowledged the allegations, but fell short of condemning the accused politician.
The son of a former girlfriend of Ellison — Karan Monahan — alleged in a Facebook post over the weekend that he had seen video of Ellison dragging his mother off a bed by her ankles while screaming and cursing at her. Monahan confirmed the incident in her own social media post, and added that Ellison had been emotionally and physically abusive toward her in other ways.
While all of that, plus resurfaced allegations of similar abuse from an ex-girlfriend that was reported and then ignored back in 2006, came out over the weekend, the DNC waited until just hours prior to the polls closing in Minnesota on Tuesday before issuing any sort of comment on the matter.
Meanwhile, Ellison won his party’s nomination to run for state attorney general in the general election in November.
According to NPR, the statement issued by the DNC about Ellison simply stated: “These allegations recently came to light and we are reviewing them. All allegations of domestic abuse are disturbing and should be taken seriously.”
No condemnation of his alleged despicable behavior, no demand that he immediately withdraw from the race or resign his House seat in disgrace, no pressure on fellow Democrats to distance themselves from the accused member … none of the usual tactics that would be rapidly deployed against an accused Republican.
For his part, Ellison has vigorously denied the allegations against him — as most accused politicians typically do. “Karen and I were in a long-term relationship which ended in 2016, and I still care deeply for her well-being,” Ellison said. “This video does not exist because I never behaved in this way, and any characterization otherwise is false.”
Ellison won the nomination for attorney general with a margin of victory greater than 30 percent, but it is a distinct possibility that the DNC’s foot-dragging for several days in acknowledging the serious allegations against him may have meant some Democrat voters weren’t fully informed of the accusations the candidate faced.
Further, rather than automatically believe the allegations put forward by Monahan — as would be the case if she had lodged accusations against a Republican — there is a subtle shift away from automatically believing accusers to making them prove their allegations prior to being taken seriously, at least when the target of such allegations is a prominent figure on the left, such as Ellison.
“It sets the expectation for survivors of all kinds of forms of abuse, whether it be abuse toward women, abuse from police officers, abuse from other people in power, to have to be the ones, like I’m doing right now, to show and prove their stories,” Monahan said of the shift of who gets the benefit of the doubt. “It’s feeding into that.”
To be sure, not all Democrats have remained tight-lipped about the allegations Ellison now faces.
“The party has no choice but to suspend him at a minimum until they figure out what’s going on,” said former DNC communications director Luis Miranda. “Frankly, it would be malpractice not to. We’ve made it clear we’re going to take these accusations seriously, at a minimum. We set too high a standard not to take this seriously.”
Yet, again, the hypocritical DNC has not specifically condemned Ellison over the allegations, nor have those allegations been addressed by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi or leftist independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, a key ally of Ellison’s.
It will be interesting to see how the DNC treats Ellison going forward, as these allegations aren’t going anywhere soon and there is a distinct possibility that similar allegations from other women could arise in the near future.
