Trump Slams Obama Legacy After Reporter Pushes Him on Crimea at G-7 Summit

Share

Trying to trap President Donald Trump with a trick question doesn’t always work so well, as one reporter just found out.

During a news conference at the G-7 conference of the world’s top economic nations, a journalist tossed out a “gotcha” question about Russia, but Trump deflected it toward former President Barack Obama instead.

“There’s something that happened that got (Russia) kicked out of the G-8 … it was the invasion, annexation of Crimea,” the reporter said to Trump as the president listened. “Do you think that Crimea should be recognized as Russia at this point?”

Crimea has been disputed between Ukraine and Russia for years. The journalist seemed to imply that the president was conceding Russian victory in that part of the world by inviting the large nation to the international summit.

Trump didn’t play the reporter’s game, however. He instead pointed a finger at Obama.

“Well you know, you’d have to ask President Obama, cause he was the one who let Crimea get away. That was during his administration,” Trump answered, referencing the 2014 takeover of Crimea by Russia.

“And he was the one that let Russia go and spend a lot of money on Crimea, because they spent a lot of money on rebuilding it … I guess they have their submarine port there,” the president continued.

“But Crimea was let go during the Obama administration, and you know, Obama can say all he wants … but he allowed Russia to take Crimea. I may have had a much different attitude.”

“So you really have to ask that question to President Obama. You know, why did he do that? But with that being said, it’s been done a long time,” he said, essentially dismissing the question as irrelevant.

Do you agree with Trump on inviting Russia to a G-8 summit?

The reporter continued to press for answers, asking Trump if he would allow Russia into a G-8 summit of nations even while Crimea was still in limbo.

“I would rather see Russia in the G-8, as opposed to the G-7,” Trump responded. “I would say that the G-8 is a more meaningful group than the G-7. Absolutely.”

Liberals have had a meltdown over the president’s proposal to include Russia in future summits, but his point remains valid: Nobody wants rising hostilities with a nuclear-armed Russia.

Regardless of what else one might thing about the Russians, it’s ridiculous to pretend that they are currently a bigger threat to the U.S. than, say, uncontrolled illegal immigration — a point that Tucker Carlson recently made.

Trump’s answer to this reporter sent a clear message: Barack Obama’s legacy has been one of failure both home and abroad, and there’s a new sheriff in town.

The left may not like it, but President Trump is determined to do what’s best for the American people, even if it sends liberals into a tizzy.
