Trump Sees the Weather, Launches Perfect Attack on 'Global Warming'

Share

Most of the Midwest and East Coast was blanketed by a winter storm this weekend, which was a perfect opportunity for snowball fights, hot chocolate and winter merriment.

It was also a perfect opportunity for President Trump to take a shot at those who use every adverse weather event to talk about global warming.

“Be careful and try staying in your house,” Trump tweeted.

“Large parts of the Country are suffering from tremendous amounts of snow and near record setting cold. Amazing how big this system is. Wouldn’t be bad to have a little of that good old fashioned Global Warming right now!”

Indeed, you probably could have used some “of that good old fashioned Global Warming” in many areas of the country.

“Some of the coldest temperatures felt so far this season started to set in across the Midwest and Northeast Sunday and are expected to plunge further overnight,” The Associated Press reported.

“Wind chills will bring temperatures into teens in the New York City area and down to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 40 degrees Celsius) in upstate New York, the National Weather Service predicted.

Do you think that global warming is a serious threat?

“In New England, they’ll fall to as low as 20 F (29 C) below zero around Boston and as low as 35 F (37 C) below zero in parts of Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire,” the service said.

“It’s life-threatening,” Ray O’Keefe, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Albany, New York, said.

“These are dangerous conditions that we’re going to be in and they’re prolonged, right through tomorrow.”

I can hear the Greek chorus of liberals chanting now: One snowstorm doesn’t disprove anthropogenic climate change. Yes, that’s true, although it’s as good a time as any to point out the serious flaws in it.

Take a study from October of last year which found that ocean temperatures had risen 60 percent more than the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change had predicted. When mathematician Nic Lewis argued that the numbers could be off by as much as 600 percent, that got almost no coverage compared to the paper itself.

Or take strong hurricanes, which always get blamed on the changing climate — except there’s not a whole lot of evidence that says they’re getting stronger and that even the National Weather Service has found that “(i)t is premature to conclude that human activities — and particularly greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming — have already had a detectable impact on Atlantic hurricane or global tropical cyclone activity.”

This is the kind of stuff that doesn’t make the first hour (or second, or third) of “Today,” and for good reason — anyone who has a view of global warming that deviates from the “it’s happening with an exclamation point and we’re all going to die unless we do something really drastic really fast” doesn’t get media play.

I can guarantee you’ll hear all sorts of tut-tutting about Trump’s tweet for the next few days if there’s a break in the breathless paeans to Nancy Pelosi and her “power moves.” They might even bring on an expert or three to cast Trump as a climate change denier and a threat to humanity, all for cracking a joke.

Rest assured there won’t be any opposition to the Chicken Littleism to be found anywhere on these segments — which, if you think about it, was what Trump was implicitly pointing out with the tweet in the first place.
