Toronto Lawmakers Go Full SJW, Call for Citizens To Be Stripped of Guns
Oh, Canada.
Just when you think our neighbors to the north can’t get any more bizarre, with their universal “health care” and the beaver being their national animal, they go out and top themselves.
After the tragic shooting that took place in Toronto’s Greektown on July 22, in which 29-year-old Faisal Hussain — who reports say had a long history of mental illness — killed two and injured another 13 people, city officials have jumped all over the issue of guns with the most shortsighted of solutions.
“Why does anyone in this city need to have a gun at all?” Toronto mayor John Tory told the National Post.
The obvious answer to Tory’s question is that some people like to go hunting. Others like to have guns for home security. Some people may even just enjoy having a vintage collection. You know, normal, everyday activities.
But perhaps a more fitting answer to Tory would be the simple issue of having some means of self-defense when killers like Hussain open fire at innocent people.
“I know answering questions like this won’t fully eliminate tragedies like this, but even if we can prevent one of these incidents, then in my view it is a discussion worth having and having very soon,” Tory added.
Therein lies one of the biggest problems with calls to get rid of guns.
Bad people will invariably find ways to do bad things. Banning guns does nothing as far as preventing “these incidents.” Hussain could just easily have been behind the wheel of a speeding car driving onto a sidewalk or gone to the local home department stores to buy materials to make a pipe bomb, yet there’s no calls to ban vehicles and department stores.
Unfortunately for gun enthusiasts in Canada, the Toronto City Council voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to ask the provincial and federal governments to ban the sales of all handguns and handgun ammunition. It was a full “social justice warrior” moment.
The final tally was 41-4, according to the U.K. Independent.
The great irony here is that Canada is already one of the most restrictive countries in the world when it comes to gun acquisition. The country is in the same league as Australia, which has an actual ban on guns.
To obtain a gun license in Canada, one must go through a lengthy process that involves firearm training, personal reference reviews and a criminal record check. Once Canadians meet all the requirements, they must then wait 28 days before being allowed to make their first purchase.
With such stringent laws regarding purchasing firearms, Hussain either followed the rules and committed unspeakable acts anyway, or he obtained the gun illegally. Banning handguns solves neither of those scenarios.
An outright gun ban can’t legislate or ban evil. Hussain would’ve found another way to do what he did had a gun ban been in place.
If Hussain obtained the gun illegally, then a gun ban is less than useless to prevent people like him from committing similar atrocious acts.
