Tim Allen's TV Son Reveals a 'New Wave' of Conservatives in Hollywood

Share

The entertainment industry is so liberal that Hollywood has become a byword for a certain sort of leftist: Well-remunerated, shielded from reality by a retinue of bodyguards, agents and hangers-on; refusing to understand why someone might want a gun for self-defense or wouldn’t want to pay higher taxes, given to acute foot-in-mouth disease whenever interviewed about anything political.

It wasn’t always this way, mind you. Although Hollywood tended to have a liberal bent in years past, Ronald Reagan came out of Hollywood, as did John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. And while those might feel like relics of a different era, the TV son of one of the entertainment industry’s most prominent conservatives says there are a lot more of them around than you might think.

Zachery Ty Bryan played Brad Taylor — the son of Tim Allen’s character — on “Home Improvement.” He’s kept a lower profile recently, but like his TV dad, he’s a political conservative. And he says he’s far from alone, even though it may seem like it sometimes.

“Surprisingly, there’s a lot more conservatives in Hollywood than you would expect,” the 36-year-old Bryan told “Fox & Friends” in an interview on Saturday. “They don’t necessarily talk about it. They stay more anonymous.”

Bryan, who grew up in agrarian Colorado far from the lights of Hollywood, compared the dominance of Hollywood liberalism to something akin to teenage cliques.

“It reminds me kind of like high school, you know,” Bryan said. “You’ve got the cool clique: They think everybody should be like them. And the party of tolerance and acceptance is only accepting if you agree with them.”

He added that “Hollywood is — they’re just kind of in this kind of echo chamber. You know, it’s kind of similar to the establishment in Washington. I feel that they’ve kind of never thought that they were penetratable (sic).”

Bryan said that Trump “caught them off guard,” and that the fallout from that has “been fun to watch.” This fallout assumedly includes Robert De Niro’s f-word performance at the Tonys, which is what Bryan was on to discuss.

Despite the liberal dominance, he said, there was a “new wave” of Hollywood conservatives and that “the pendulum is swinging the other way, and I’m proud to be a part of it.”

He also criticized Trump-hating Kathy Griffin for her recent beef with comedian Kevin Hart (during which she called Hart a “p—-” for not going after Trump in his routines since Hart is a black man). Bryan said that “legitimizing” Griffin “really irks” him.

Check out the interview here. Bryan’s interview starts about the 1-minute mark.

“I don’t know his political beliefs but I appreciate that he doesn’t throw it in our faces,” Bryan said of Hart.

Do you think that we'll see more open conservatives in Hollywood?

“It’s kind of funny to think that you should have a political stance just because of the color of your skin.”

Bryan isn’t as active as he used to be, but what he says seems to have some weight. We’re seeing a moment in the entertainment industry where unorthodox thinkers are coming out and speaking their minds, whether it be Kanye West, Tim Allen, Rob Lowe or (sigh) Dennis Rodman.

That’s a beginning. Maybe in a few years, we’ll see the “new wave” that Bryan has talked about. I certainly hope so, inasmuch as I hope for anything that will give Jimmy Kimmel a bad case of heartburn.
