Scaramucci Assembling Anti-Trump Ex-Cabinet Members, Trump Shoots Him Down as a 'Nut Job'

“The Mooch” keeps coming back for more.

Anthony Scaramucci, one-time White House communications director and supporter of President Donald Trump who’s turned into a vocal opponent, was on CNN Monday to pitch the idea of getting former Trump Cabinet officials together to attack the president in the 2020 election campaign.

The words were barely out of his mouth, though, before Trump was firing back.

According to The Hill, Scaramucci’s comments came during an interview with “New Day” on CNN (that’s a shock).

In an idea so nebulous it would not have merited mention if CNN weren’t so fanatically anti-Trump, Scaramucci said Republicans should find an alternative to the White House incumbent.

“I’m in the process of putting together a team of people that feel the exact same way that I do. This is not a ‘Never Trump’ situation, this is not just screeching rhetoric. This is, ‘OK, the guy’s unstable, everyone inside knows it, everyone outside knows it, let’s see if we can find a viable alternative,’” Scaramucci said, according to The HIll.

“Moreover, I’ve got to get some of these former Cabinet officials in unity to speak up about it.”

However, he didn’t disclose the names of any potential challengers to Trump for the GOP nomination.

Trump, who might well have been watching the interview when it first aired, took to social media almost immediately to go on the offensive against the man who’s also known as “The Mooch.”

Do you think any Republican could challenge Trump for the GOP nomination?

“Anthony Scaramucci is a highly unstable ‘nut job’ who was with other candidates in the primary who got shellacked, & then unfortunately wheedled his way into my campaign. I barely knew him until his 11 days of gross incompetence-made a fool of himself, bad on TV. Abused staff…got fired,” Trump wrote.

“Wrote a very nice book about me just recently. Now the book is a lie? Said his wife was driving him crazy, ‘something big’ was happening with her. Getting divorced. He was a mental wreck. We didn’t want him around. Now Fake News puts him on like he was my buddy!”

The personal jabs about Scaramucci’s marital problems aside, Trump had a point.

It was less than a year ago that Scaramucci published a book titled “Trump: The Blue Collar President.” The fulsome Amazon marketing material includes the line: “It was then that Anthony realized that Donald Trump and his economic policies were the best bet for our country’s future.“

But now Scaramucci is claiming to think Trump is unstable?

If nothing else, the Trump presidency has broken new ground in just about every way. But one way it’s unlikely to break with precedent is the prospect of the president being dethroned by a rival from within his own party.

If Ronald Reagan couldn’t unseat Gerald Ford in 1976, it’s unlikely anyone Anthony Scaramucci could come up with could take on Trump for the Republican nomination in 2020.

Right now, the only announced challenger to Trump is former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld. Mark Sanford, the former governor and congressman in South Carolina is also said to be considering a Trump challenge. It’s safe to say neither has any real chance of defeating Trump in a nomination fight.

There’s a more likely explanation for Scaramucci’s renewed television facetime than the far-fetched possibility he’s actually going to find a successful challenger to Donald Trump.

A scant 11 days service in the White House wouldn’t qualify anyone as an expert of the president inside, but when that president is Donald Trump, some media outlets will take just about anything to put a Trump critic on the air.

Scaramucci’s time in the public eye proved how much the man likes media attention. When he provides anti-Trump ammo, he gets it – as Monday morning proved.

And it’s a good chance that Scaramucci will keep coming back for more.
