Report: Trump Setting Up for Huge DHS Change. Can Nielsen, Stop Immigrants, Build the Wall
One of the biggest isues that helped Donald Trump secure his resounding win in the 2016 election was his commitment to border security.
Whereas Democrats and leftists seem enamored with the idea of letting illegal immigrants into the country virtually unchecked, and seem oblivious to the negative impact they can bring, Trump made securing the borders a rallying cry for his supporters.
To be perfectly honest, a sovereign nation without secured borders is no nation at all. There are very literal reasons why countries are separated by lines on a map. Without secured borders, every land mass may as well be a homogeneous blob.
And despite the constant holes being poked in the Democrats’ narrative about border security, the fact remains that they are steadfast in trying to obstruct Trump’s campaign promises at every turn.
That being said, the lack of meaningful progress on border security is not the sole product of Democratic resistance.
Unfortunately for Trump, some of those issues have arisen from right under his own nose. Now, he reportedly plans on doing something about it.
According to The Washington Post, Trump is planning on firing Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen as early as this week. The Post cited five current and former White House officials in the report.
Trump has targeted Nielsen frequently in both public and private, according to the Post.
According to the report, Nielsen is also unhappy with the job, but wants to remain until at least Dec. 6, which would be her one-year anniversary in the position.
One of Nielsen’s few allies in the White House is Chief of Staff John Kelly, but the Post report indicates Kelly’s influence might be waning.
(Both ABC and NBC, meanwhile, have reported that Kelly’s own position at the White House could be ending soon.)
Trump has reportedly frequently butted heads with Nielsen, according to the Post. She has told the president on multiple occasions that some of his hard-line stances on immigration are not feasible. Trump has been “frustrated” with many of Nielsen’s objections to border security, the Post reported.
To be fair, Trump’s stances on immigration are certainly “hard-line,” but mostly in comparison to the lax border security policies of the Obama administration.
While Trump has certainly kept his fair share of campaign promises, such cutting deregulation and taxes that have helped spur a booming economy, and negotiating trade packages more beneficial to the American people, some conservative pundits have certainly called him out over a lack of progress on his border wall.
Another key thing to note is that while Nielsen’s ouster may expedite some of the process of getting a wall built, Trump will still face plenty of opposition — especially with Democrats taking over the House of Representatives beginning in January.
At the very least, Trump has shown a willingness to shake things up to further his campaign promises and agenda.
